Interest in reunion is on the increase. Thirteen classmates and wives have made reservations at the Hanover Inn. These are in addition to the 24 members who have taken over the two new motels in Hanover. You may add the following names of classmates and wives who have joined the growing list: Sid Backus, Fred Harvey, Chick Jordan, WeeKimball, Walt Reilly, Jack Steeves, and ArtGray, whose name is saved until last to make special mention that he and Janet are driving on from California for the occasion. TimVaitses writes that he is on the "last lap," and will be back in New England in time for Angela and him to be at the reunion in Hanover and Whitefield. Art Bush will pull out of retirement in South Yarmouth, Mass., to make for Hanover. Troy Parker is coming anyhow, and is now working on his wife Janet to make the trip with him. If any of you girls think she won't have a good time, just drop her a line at Palmer Gulch Lodge in the Black Hills and tell her so! Cliff Cuddy is hoping but not yet quite sure whether he can make it or not.
By this time you will have received a special invitation from Schuyler Dodge to come to Whitefield. Incidentally, this was entirely his idea and there was no prompting from any classmate to suggest it. It certainly indicates the Dodge family's interest in having us with them in the interval from Wednesday morning to Monday morning. You have only to ask anyone who has participated in this splendid post-reunion to find enthusiastic endorsement of the opportunity. Although Schuyler did not hint it in his letter, I am sure he would appreciate hearing from all classmates who intend to go to the Mountain View as soon as possible so that he can know the number of reservations that he will have to fit in among his regular guests. Let's make this really a great occasion for 1911!
What about the Class Directory? Well, it's on the way, but progress is greatly handicapped because of the information that has not arrived via the little postal cards which you received earlier this year.
Fred and Sarge Eaton now have a brother and sister living in Hanover, namely Bill, of the class of '17, and Eleanor Eaton Kelsey. That makes sure of these 1911ers being occasional visitors to Hanover. A letter from Marguerite Eaton said that she and Fred were on the way to Florida to get rested up for the reunion in June here and in Whitefield. The southern trip is to include a visit with Fred Jr. and family, including four grandchildren in Atlanta. Fred Jr. is head of personnel for Sears Roebuck in the southern states and Cuba, with headquarters in Atlanta.
Another traveling couple just heard from are Cap and Coleen Hedges on their way to the Evangeline country, and then to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., to visit their son Sam. They have left a new grandchild in Cedar Rapids. She is Sally's and Horace Jr.'s daughter, Nancy, born on August 26.
The Harold Cards announce the engagement of their daughter Marian to Russell J. Donnelly of Hamilton, Ontario, a graduate of McMaster University with M.S. degrees from McMaster and Yale. Marian is a graduate of Oberlin, and both she and her fiance are now graduate students at Yale.
I am sure that the class will be interested not only in the fact that George Morris left some money to the College, but in the words by which he made this bequest in his will. This bequest was placed in trust, with the income going to the Alumni Fund on the Tucker Foundation of Dartmouth College "as long as any 1911 class members are alive. Then the entire amount is to go to Dartmouth, 'with its seat in the village of Hanover in that state (N. H.) but located in the hearts of Dartmouth men everywhere.' "
It is with sorrow that we must add two names to the list of departed classmates, LeoMulfelder and Robert Sault, both of whom have been loyal members of the class family.
It is time that tribute be paid to many of the 1911 wives who have continued their interest and carried on making contributions to the class and Alumni Fund:
Inez Adams is house mother at the Alpha Chi Omega House at the University of New Hampshire in Durham.
Alice Dixon Bond continues to be active as book review editor for the Boston Herald, makes a frequent appearance on the radio and is a guest speaker at public gatherings. She has moved from the Newtonville home to 70 Mount Vernon St. in Boston.
Mary Dodge is now Mary Silk, and the proprietress of the Mountain View House in Whitefield, N. H. Her husband, Tom Silk, is Professor of Accounting at the Hotel School at Cornell, so Mary is in Ithaca winters and in Whitefield summers.
Julia Dunning is carrying on the homestead in St. Paul.
Ruth Hastings has kept her home at 11666 Winding Way, Los Altos, Calif., but frequently travels to visit her children and their families, who are scattered across the country. She hopes to make Whitefield in June.
Linda Hawkridge occupies a beautiful home that Les had just completed at 27 Kingsbury Road, Chestnut Hill, Mass. She is spending the winter in the Barbados, where she can get rest and the opportunity for swimming. She continues her interests and devotes much time to her many outside activities. She will also be at Whitefield in June.
Miriam Morris is continuing to keep her beautiful home, "The Lindens," in Washington and is busy, occupied in the many public and charitable functions with which she has always been concerned. It was a pleasure for Bee and me to have lunch with her in Washington recently and to find her so engaged. She is leaving in April for an archeological trip through Greece, where she hopes to renew the memories of her girlhood in visiting many of the spots that the trip will include.
Mildred Rollins is still engaged in work in Philadelphia but is hoping to sell the home in Berwyn when her business engagements have been completed, and move to their old favorite home town of Greenwich, Conn. She is one more who hopes to be at Whitefield in June.
Helen Russell is continuing at the old home in South Hadley, Mass. Two of her daughters are now married.
Marjorie Swain is busy bringing up her two children in White Plains and at the summer home in Nantucket.
Cora Taylor continues at her home in Palo Alto at 4293 El Camino Real. Her mother, who is now 92, is with her, so between the care of her mother and running the garden, Cora is kept busy.
Helen Troy has returned from her year's vacation in Italy to her home at 803 Looett St., Houston, Texas.
Priscilla Whelden has moved into an apartment at 184 Sullivan St., New York City, where she has the company of her nephew, Bob Whelden. Priscilla has recently spent part of the summer in Lyme, N. H.
A FAVORITE SPOT: 11ers like to gather beside the pool at Whitefield, N. H., where theclass will gather again after reunion in June.
