The old cry of "ELEVEN UP" has not sounded across the Hanover Plain for many a year but the time is approaching when shortly you will be hearing it again. Plans for reunion are complete and their fulfillment is progressing. Badges have been ordered, dining and meeting places are reserved, Massachusetts Hall will be in readiness, requests for reservations at the Inn and Motor Inn are being filled and the number of men planning on returning is increasing slowly. You may add to the list in the last "LEVEN UP" these names in the "Yes" list; Carl and Dorothy Bowker, Ted and Alice O'Leary, Bill Pearse, Francis Qua, Henry and Bertha Seaver, Dick Stevens, and Archie Winship. Meanwhile also the number of widows has climbed to fifteen with the additions of Cora Taylor, Lillian Cooper, Ruth Hastings, Margaret Coy, Linda Hutchinson and her husband, Maynard. Regrets have been expressed by Jinks Morton, Mike Hill, Pete Vehmeyer and Dutch Waterbury. Individual solicitations will be continued by Jack Russell and others but there will be no other general mailing asking for names of those who intend to return. The present list will be relied on to allow for room reservations and attendance at the various class and college functions. For such events as the class dinner and banquet a minimum guarantee must be made. Accordingly it will be greatly appreciated if anyone changes his mind about attending reunion, either coming or not coming, please drop a line to the secretary. On November 1 the count is 94 men and 74 wives. Let's make it at least 100, that is two for each year since graduation.
The little 50th Reunion booklet should be in your hands before this column reaches you. Bee has typed all the material that has been put together and it is now in the hands of the printer. We hope that you will like it and that it may give rise to a little feeling of nostalgia.
The annual class dinner at the University Club in Boston was an enjoyable occasion as usual but for the smallest number of classmates present at any of these gatherings. On hand were Briggs, Burleigh, Josh Clark,Crooks, Dunham, Farrell, Lovejoy, ChickJordan, Mayo, Patten, Dick Stevens, Smith and Winship. We were joined by Lyme Armes '12 since he was the lone representative of that class. However we would welcome him any time. We missed a few of the old standbys who had counted on being there. Les Gibson had a client show up who needed to be entertained; Spim Norris had a patient who claimed his attention; a cold kept Al Wheeler at home and Dutch Whitman had to yield to a bad attack of arthritis. Al telegraphed the group, "Sorry to have missed seeing all of my best friends." All present are officially listed as retired although only a few actually are and there was not a feeble looking gent in the crowd.
The one sad note on this occasion was word of the death of Guy Putnam the day previous. He was a quiet and gentle sort and although we had not seen much of him in recent years we recall our many pleasant associations with him in college and the high regard his business friends held for him. Chuck Bush and Dick and Mary Chase represented the class at the funeral services.
From Margaret Coy whose husband Lawrence died in 1956 comes this letter which is indeed gratifying. "Thanks for the invitation to the class reunion. I know I would enjoy meeting Lawrence's old friends and as I am planning on flying to New York next June you can count on me attending. Again thank you — it was a thoughtful thing to do - inviting the widows." Her new address is 1220 Irwin St., Irwin Arms Apt. 5, San Rafael, Calif.
One of the pleasures of a class secretary is hearing from the wives of those who no longer can write for themselves and know of their interest in keeping in touch with their classmates.
Marjorie Swain writes, "I hope to be at Our First Fiftieth but I may be in Europe if there still is a Europe in 1961."
From Helen Russell: "After forty years at my present address I am now moving into smaller quarters. I am interested in the Fiftieth Reunion and would like to go if possible. My new address is 185 Pine St., Holyoke, Mass."
Mrs. Stanley Rockwood who is engaged at the Hobart College Infirmary says, "I enjoy the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, SO do the Hobart students." She spent the summer at her old home town of Batesville, Ark.
Helen Hall whom with her daughter, Helen, we enjoyed at earlier reunions has this message: "Thanks for thinking of me. I am sorry not to be there but two grandchildren who are graduating will prevent me." She still retains her residence in Morristown,
Julia Dunning will have things to tell us at reunion—if she gets back from Europe with any change left. On September 16 she with her daughter Julia, who is employed by Air France, left for Scotland, England, Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria, Spain and Portugal. They should be back in November.
On her birthday Cora Taylor wrote that she was skipping past another milestone and that once she could hop right over one, but her "hopability" was on the wane. Well spoken for the rest of us. Her mother who was in her 99th year died last June. Cora is very busy in community affairs but here is her hope for the future: "Next year I am sure will be better and of course I am hoping to get away for a while. That being a big year for 1911 you know what I am hoping for at least."
Bob Barstow is the Interim Pastor in the First Congregational Church in Danbury, Conn. This is a parish of over a thousand members and among them is a lady who used to live in Malone, N. Y., on the same street as Hopper Allison and used to play with him. Now she wants his address.
The Clearwater, Fla., clan will shortly be gathering. Dick and Mary Chase will spend January and February at the Yacht Basin Apartments, Clearwater Beach. As of November 15 Ken and Dorothy Knapp are settled at 10515 94th Ave., N. Largo, Fla., which is next door to Clearwater. Also we repeat the Burleighs will be opening headquarters at 1123 Drew St.
SEE YOU THERE.
