Coach Karl Michael's Dartmouth swimming team continues to rank as one of the best winter teams with a current record of four wins and two defeats in dual competition. Since the last report, the Big Green swimmers triumphed over Army 52-32 and Navy 44-40, but lost Feb. 12 to a powerful Harvard team 48-36.
Captain John Glover, Dartmouth's All-American freestyle ace, continues to display the form which makes him one of the best all-around performers in the country. Against Army at West Point, Glover set a new pool record with 1:30.8 in the individual medley. He missed the Army pool record in the 100-yard freestyle by one-tenth second, but came back to swim the first leg of the final relay in a record time of 50.5. Other Dartmouth winners were Duke Hust in the 220, sophomore Neil Sween in the backstroke, and the two relay teams. Sween, Jack Hodgson and Dick Mount swam the medley relay, while Glover, Bob McCollom, Mike Buck and Dick Karslake carried the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Dartmouth entertained Navy during the Winter Carnival weekend and despite the 44-40 score, it was Dartmouth's meet all the way. Duke Hust won the 4 and teamed up with John Glover to sweep the 220. Glover also won the 100-yard freestyle with Dick Karslake third, while Jim Venman and Tuck Creamer placed one-two in the dive for other Big Green points. Neil Sween won the backstroke, but the Middies pulled up in the final event by winning the relay over a quartet of Dartmouth reserves.
However, on the most recent weekend, a strong Harvard team, ranked second to Yale in the East, topped Dartmouth rather easily 48-36. Glover set a Harvard pool record with a 50.1 clocking in the 100, while his 22.6 time in the 50-yard event was just short of a record. Neil Sween annexed the backstroke with a 2:19.7 time, his best to date, while Jim Venman displayed top form to win the dive. Duke Hust finished second to Harvard's Ail-American Jim Jorgensen in the 220 and also anchored the final relay.
The Dartmouth freshman swimmers, under Karl Michael, are undefeated, winning over Andover, Exeter and the Harvard frosh since Christmas. Ernie Drosdick of Miami, Florida, has set new freshman records in the 220 and individual medley, while Bill Bahrenburg, the frosh captain, set a new 440 record against Harvard. Don McCree in the backstroke, breaststroker Mike Growney, diver Joe Hughes and freestylers John Graf and Dave Rice are other top freshman swimmers. These men along with the returning lettermen promise Coach Michael another good team next winter.
