Dartmouth's finest game of the season was played before some 43,000 rain-soaked fans at the Yale Bowl. The Bulldogs had gone through their first five games undefeated, untied and unscored upon, and were favored to defeat Dartmouth. For the first half it seemed as though they would, as the Elis went off at halftime leading 8-0. However, the Indians put on a mighty second-half display which vanquished Yale, 12-8, and put Dartmouth back into contention for the Ivy League title.
Actually, Dartmouth dominated play throughout the game, and Yale had to stand off Dartmouth's attack on eleven plays from within the 15-yard line during the first half. The Indians got an early break by recovering a Yale fumble on the 38-yard line and then marched to the 5-yard line before they lost the ball on a fumble. Later in the first period they had the ball on the Yale 4-yard line but again fumbled. In the second stanza Dartmouth ground to the Yale 15, but again the Yale defense tightened and the Elis took over when Ben Urban's field goal attempt from 29 yards out just missed.
At this point the Bulldogs put on their only sustained drive of the afternoon, moving 55 yards for a touchdown. Rich Winkler, the Yale captain, was the top ground-gainer on this drive and went over for the TD. Tom Singleton raced around end for two points.
The Indians struck back early in the second half and went 58 yards in eleven plays for the first tally. Quarterback Bill Gundy turned in an amazing performance in the rain as he completed eight of eleven passes, two of which went for scores. On that first march Gundy tossed eleven yards to end Seth Strickland who made a leaping catch in the end zone for the TD. In the fourth-period drive Gundy was superb as the Indians went 68 yards in eight plays. He hit fullback Bill Hibbs twice with first-down passes, and then, with Yale expecting a rushing play, Gundy rolled to his right and threw to halfback Al Rozycki, who took the ball on the Elis' 20-yard stripe and, aided by a nice block by Hibbs, went all the way.
