One of the most dismal hockey seasons in Dartmouth history drew to a close last month when an alumni team walloped the varsity by a 15-4 score. Coming only three days after the freshmen had stopped the varsity 3-1 in an informal game, the result was not entirely unexpected. As Stan Priddy '43, former Olympic player, put it following the traditional alumni-varsity tilt, "Jerry, how the H... did this team ever manage to win ten games?"
It was an amazing performance to end the season with ten wins and only eleven defeats. The team won some good games and lost some close ones, but, like the girl with the curl, when they were bad they were awful.
Since last report the Big Green skaters lost to Boston College 5-3, then defeated Middlebury 4-3, Army 10-4, and Boston University 5-4 before losing to Brown 11-2, Princeton 11-7, the freshmen 3-1 and the alumni 15-4.
As expected, Dartmouth's first line of Chet Gale, Captain "Red" Hennigar and Ab Oakes accounted for most of Dartmouth's scoring. Gale was top man with 20 goals and 18 assists for 38 points, followed by Oakes with 17 goals and seven assists for 24 points and Hennigar with nine goals, 14 assists for 23 points. Charlie Sprott of the second line with 20 points ranked fourth followed by Bob Marchant with 12 and Dan Goggin and George Snelson with nine points each.
Although the freshman hockey team won eleven games and lost only four, Coach Eddie Jeremiah reports that prospects for next year are not so bright. "We'll get some defensive help and possibly one or two forwards, but still not enough to compete on an even basis with the teams on our schedule. It's getting so that every game is a major one for us," concluded Jeremiah sadly.
