At the Boston dinner launching the Alumni Fund drive, on March 29, the John R. Mason Trophy for 1954 was presented to Stanley L. Newton '45 for his excellent work among class agents ten or less years out of college. The Citation accompanying the award follows:
The John R. Mason Trophy is presented each year to the most outstanding head class agent of the youngest ten alumni classes in the judgment of the Alumni Fund Committee. The award for last spring's campaign goes to a young alumnus whose work on the Fund matches Dartmouth's highest hopes for its oncoming classes.
Under his tireless and efficient leadership, the steady growth of this class in both participation and dollars has resembled that of the Fund as a whole. Last spring his work brought in 459 contributors, a new high record for the class, and 49 givers more than 1952, the year before he became agent. In dollars he has brought the class in two years from just under $5,000 to. $6,600. Last spring marked the first time since 1947 that this class exceeded its assigned objective.
This has been no easy task with a World War II class whose membership was torn asunder at the outset of the war, a class which as a result now includes more nongraduates than any other. Only by inspiring leadership, careful planning, sound organization, close attention to successful ideas, and long hours of just plain hard work has this agent been able to restore class vigor and achieve these results. In June his class will celebrate its tenth reunion, and this class leader plans to mark the occasion with another outstanding Fund success.
It is, therefore, a particular pleasure for the Fund Committee to award the John R. Mason Trophy for 1954 to STANLEY L. NEWTON, Class of 1945, and to present him with this Louis Orr etching as a token of the Committee's respect and appreciation.
