One of the most active and rapidly growing organizations on campus is the Dartmouth Rowing Club led by President Hartwell Perry '55. Crew has had a long uphill fight at Dartmouth, but in the past three or four years under the aegis of the Rowing Club the sport has come in to its own, and Dartmouth crews now compete on a nearly equal basis with the top collegiate rowers in the East.

The Dartmouth heavyweight and lightweight crews opened their 1955 season auspiciously on April 16 with the varsity heavyweights defeating Brown by 1.4 seconds over a Henley course (mile and 5/16) on the Connecticut River. The win continued the varsity heavies unbeaten streak from last spring. The freshman heavyweight crew also nipped the Brown frosh on the same course. The lightweight crews had a triumphant day against Columbia crews on the Harlem River with the varsity winning by one length and the jayvee crew by a close two yards, but the frosh crew lost by a narrow margin.

Rowing in the number one boat for the varsity heavies were Tom Fead, bow, Bill Faunce, Dan Codman, Al Graham, Captain Bill Delena, John Rosenberger, Pete Knoke and Ken Ragland, stroke. Leon Martel is coxswain for the varsity boat.

The freshman heavy boat consisted of Tom Maguire at bow, Al Pizner, Stu Rice, John Phillips, Bill Tindal, Mike McKeown, Bob Kinsey, Walt Vail, stroke, and Tom Mamoru, coxswain.

During the spring vacation the varsity, jayvee, and freshman heavyweight crews worked out at the Kent School in Connecticut, while all the lightweight crews were at Annapolis. The heavies had one practice sprint race against Yale, while the lightweights practiced against Navy.

Coaching the heavyweight varsity crew is Thaddeus Seymour, an instructor in the English Department at Dartmouth and a top rower for Princeton from 1946 to 1948. In addition to coaching, Mr. Seymour is playing a major role in revitalizing the sport at Dartmouth. Student coaches include Hartwell Perry (varsity lightweights), Pete Buhler (freshman heavyweights), Curtis Jones (freshman lightweights), and John Blades (assistant lightweights).

A recent check-up showed that more than 100 Dartmouth students are competing for the Big Green in rowing, with many others associated with the Rowing Club in managerial and other capacities.

Although recognized by the Dartmouth College Athletic Council for purposes of letter awards and scheduling, the Dartmouth Rowing Club is not financed in any way by the DCAC. Over the years the Club has come to rely in large measure on contributions from undergraduate members and from gifts by alumni and friends.

The Dartmouth Rowing Club has grown tremendously in recent years and all alumni may take a real pride in its solid accomplishments. Persons interested in further details on the Club or in supporting the organization should write to the Dartmouth Rowing Club, Hanover, N. H.
