The Dartmouth varsity cross-country team wound up its season by losing to Harvard 19-38 and finishing in sixth place in the Heptagonals. The dual meet with Harvard was held over the 4.68-mile course in Hanover. Hal Gerry, the Crimson's number one runner, set a blazing pace and won in 26:21.8, just two seconds off the course record set by John Kelly of B.U. Second place went to Dartmouth's Dick Hogarty who ran one of the best races of his career, but Harvard placed men in the third through sixth places to clinch the meet. Phil Langtry of Dartmouth was seventh.
Gerry of Harvard again proved his ability when two weeks later at the Heptagonals, held in New York's Van Cortland Park, he finished second behind Cornell's John Rosenbaum. The five-mile championship run was held in a blinding snowstorm. Dick Hogarty was the first man across for Dartmouth, finishing 23rd, with Walt Clarkson in 25th place, Pete Jebsen 39th, Phil Langtry 50th, Paul Merriken 55th, Mark Starr 56th, and Sam Hull 62nd.
The final team scores showed Dartmouth in sixth place in a field of ten teams with a score of 192. Cornell won the team championship with a low score of 53 followed by Army, Harvard, Yale and Navy. Behind Dartmouth in team standings were Columbia, Penn, Brown .and Princeton.
This was certainly not the best season for Dartmouth in cross-country, but considering the loss of Captain Mike Morrissey and the lack of depth, the Indians turned in a most creditable performance in traditional Dartmouth fashion.
