A new honor came to E. Grosvenor Plowman '20 when he was awarded the Salzberg Medal by Syracuse University on February 14, for his patriotism and contributions to the transportation field. The citation accompanying the award was given by Dr. William Pearson Tolley, Chancellor of Syracuse University, and is as follows:
E. Grosvenor Plowman, business executive, public servant, author, and former college teacher, you have rendered a distinguished service to the field of industrial traffic management.
A graduate of Dartmouth College, you undertook your graduate studies at Boston University and Harvard University. In 1937 you received your Ph.D. from the University of Chicago School of Business.
During the 1920's you taught economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and later at Boston University. You became industrial secretary of the Associated Industries of Massachusetts in 1924 and served on the staff of the Babson Institute. Later you were appointed professor of business management at the University of Denver.
In 1937 you became traffic manager of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation and the Colorado and Wyoming Railway. In 1944 you were elected to your present position of vice president in charge of traffic for the United States Steel Corporation.
During World War II, you served as traffic manager of the Steel Division and later as transportation consultant to the chairman of the War Production Board.
Later you were requested by the Department of Defense to organize the Military Traffic Service, and you served as its first Director from August 1950 to March 1951.
For your meritorious service, the Secretary of Defense in 1952 presented you with the Department's highest civilian award, the Certificate of Appreciation for Exceptional Civilian Service.
You were one of the founder members and past president of the American Society of Traffic and Transportation, and you are now serving as president of the National Defense Transportation Association. In addition, you have rendered invaluable service to the advancement of traffic management as a member of American Iron and Steel Institute and National Industrial Traffic League.
You are the author of a major publication, Business Organization and Management, written in collaboration with Elmore Peterson in 1941, and you have contributed a variety of important articles to the literature in transportation.
For your service to your country, your many valuable contributions to transportation management, for your efforts to advance education in transportation, and for encouraging the establishment of professional standards for those earning their living in transportation, you have earned the right to be named Salzberg Memorial Lecturer and to receive the Salzberg Medal for distinguished service to the field of transportation.
