John Henderson wrote of his visit to the College:
"Just returned from Hanover from taking Hazel to the eye clinic. I took with me certain books that I thought might be received for the College library. Several of these books have been very dear to me but the time may not be long, etc.
"I was very fortunate in my high school days to be very close to Elizabeth Stewart Phelps. In some ways I was almost a son to her and in her home I met dignitaries - Oliver Wendell Holmes, Dr. Smith, author of America, Edward Everett Hale and several others.
"I have several of her books, but one in particular I wished to have preserved in the Library of Dartmouth College, the title, The Story of JesusChrist. In this book I included a picture of Miss Phelps and several personal letters she had sent me at various times. There were some twenty books in all."

Erdix Smith, Paragraph 2, Page two, March20, 1954:
"When I see you fellows, I should like to swap yarns with you and also tell you about some of the excursions I have had into the four corners of the Continent after the 'finny tribe'. In the East, all along the lakes of Maine and rivers of New Brunswick for salmon; for trout, Cape Britton Island- for trout, bass, pike and muskies, the semiwilds of Quebec and Ontario; for the big Kings, across the wheat fields of Dakota and Canada, through the scenic Canadian Rockies and the lofty forests of British Columbia to the Port, of Vancouver, across the Strait to Victoria and north up Vancouver Island; and Coho salmon in the Straits, down the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River - just for fun.
"Along the New England Coast many times for stripers, blues and tunas; many months on the Florida coasts and on the Keys for Kings, sails, barracuda, bones and other game fish; and across the Everglades in an air boat. One trip to California, Las Vegas and Lake Mead."
