Dartmouth's track team has been doing about as expected with a 1-1 record in dual competition and an 8th place in the Outdoor Heptagonal Championships held at Princeton. The Big Green got 12 points in the Heptagonals, with Pete Jebsen and Doug Brew placing second and third, respectively, behind Cornell's Mike Browne in the half-mile event. Browne set a blistering time of 1:54.9 for the event and Jebsen and Brew turned in fine times to keep pace. Dartmouth's Lou Metzger, defending co-champion in the pole vault, and Bill Buchanan wound up in a 7-way tie for first place in that event with leaps of 13 feet, while the Big Green's highjump ace, Dick Fairley, went up six feet for a fourth-place tie in that event.
The previous week the Indians displayed more strength by defeating Boston University 85-56 on Memorial Field. Dartmouth showed particular strength in the field events with Dick Fairley winning the high jump, Bill Buchanan the pole vault, and John Chapman the broad jump and high hurdles. Sandy Heath won the quarter-mile run for the Big Green and Pete Jebsen romped to victory in the half-mile race.
Against Harvard, in the first dual meet of the season, Dartmouth found rougher going and lost 100-40. Pete Jebsen, running on a muddy track, broke a 23-year-old record in the half-mile, winning in a time of 1:544- He also anchored Dartmouth's winning relay team of Sandy Heath, Paul Berry and Doug Brew. Lou Metzger and Bill Springer placed one-two in the pole vault, while Dick Fairley won the high jump and Skip Meneely, a returning service veteran, annexed the javelin throw with a toss of 180' 5".
Dartmouth is still without the services of Captain John Harlor, outstanding broad jumper, who injured his heel in winter competition and has been unable to compete since.
