The Dartmouth Rowing Club crews have been doing well this spring, although perhaps not quite as well as was hoped in the pre-season estimates. In the most recent action, the Dartmouth heavy-weight crews rowed at the E.A.R.C. sprint championships at Princeton. In the qualifying heat the heavies battled a powerful Navy crew right down to the wire before yielding first place, then finished a respectable ninth among the thirteen crews competing in the finals. In a similar E.A.R.C. race on the Charles River, the freshman lightweight crew finished third, the junior varsity fourth and the varsity lightweight crew sixth.

In the only home races of the season, held during Green Key weekend, the varsity lightweight crew lost the Biglin Trophy to Harvard, but defeated M.I.T. over a Henley course. The heavyweight crews at all levels won handily over the Boston University crews on the same day.

A week earlier, the varsity heavyweight crew finished second to Syracuse and ahead of Rutgers in a race at Lake Onondaga, while the J.V. heavies duplicated this performance. The freshman crew, one of the strongest seen at Dartmouth, defeated both Syracuse and Rutgers. In the opening meet of the season the light-weight crews swept four races against Pennsylvania with the varsity, jayvee and freshman boats defeating the Quakers, while a second freshman boat edged out St. Joseph's School.

The big race, of course, is coming in June when Dartmouth competes at the I.R.A. Regatta on Lake Onondaga against the top crews in the nation. Although Dartmouth is not expected to come near winning, the Indians are still hoping for a strong showing.

Dartmouth's informal Rugby Club, after losing the Bermuda championship to Princeton, avenged that loss by defeating Princeton in regular play, then downed Harvard, M.I.T. and the Montreal Barbarians for a record of seven wins and only one loss. The Big Green ruggers are now planning a trip to England next winter, during Christmas vacation, to pit their skill against some top-flight British teams.

The Dartmouth Yacht Club has been busy almost every weekend, competing on an individual and team basis in various sailing regattas in the East. In the only home meet the Indian sailors retained the Phelps Cup against all competition at Lake Mascoma over Green Key weekend.
