Although thin on material to some extent, Coach Tom Dent's soccer team has done well in games to date, with two wins against two defeats. After losing the opener to a strong University of Connecticut team, 4-2, the Big Green went on to win two league victories in a row, edging Pennsylvania 2-1 and defeating Brown 3-0. However, in the most recent game with Princeton, which is favored to capture the league title, the Indians were stopped by a 5-0 score.

The opening game against UConn was played on a wet field which hampered the Dartmouth attack more than it did the opposition. The Indians had several scoring shots stopped by a large puddle in front of the UConn net and Dartmouth's defense was not as effective in this first game as Coach Tom Dent would have wanted.

After squeaking by Penn, the Indians picked up steam to conquer Brown, scoring the first goal during the first minute of play on a penalty kick by outside right Don Betterton, who notched a second goal ten minutes later when he picked up a loose ball and booted it home. The Indians' third tally came in the final minutes of play as halfback Mitch Engle, who played standout ball throughout the game, scored on a beautiful kick from 20 yards out.

Engle, a bulwark on defense, was injured in the first period of the Princeton game and his loss seriously hampered the Dartmouth defenses which the sharpshooting Tiger attack line riddled for five goals. Inside right Jim Kennedy, the team's top scorer to date, played his usual brilliant game, as did halfback Fritz Arens. Veteran net tender Randy Malin stopped as many shots as he could, but Dartmouth was just outclassed and outmanned in this contest.

Meanwhile, the freshman soccer squad has shown promise by defeating Brewster Academy 5-1 and Kimball Union Academy twice by 3-0 and 5-1 scores. Coached by Ward Burian '58, the freshman squad has a starting lineup of brothers Stu and Hugh Johnson at inside left and inside right, Jerry Pepper and Nit Pibulsonggram at outside right and outisde left, with Bill Blees or Frank Mori at center forward. Dave Smith is the center half, with Bill Marx or Jim Schaefer at left halfback and Mike Schwartz at right half. Dave McCowey plays at left fullback with Josh Rich or Bob Sayer at right fullback and Dick Ellington is the starting goalie.
