Hi everyone! Greetings from your new class secretary. It'll be my job to take over from Reg Bankart, who has been ably preparing this column for ten years. It's not an easy job — collecting and writing this material for each issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. I'll do my best, but I need help from all of you. Send me any news you have, and send it frequently — news of births, promotions, job changes, etc. — so we can keep class records up to date, and so I'll have the latest dope to pass on to you each issue.

Now about our 20th reunion....

The Fred Haleys came from Washington state, the Dave Smiths and Bill Mumler from California, the Ed Freemans from Illinois, Wayne Geib from South Dakota, Charlie Gillan and family from Texas, the Dud Russells from Minnesota, and Howie Croninger flew in from Puerto Rico.

These were only a representative few of the members of the Class of '35 who converged on Hanover during the weekend of June 17-18-19 for the 20th reunion of our graduation from Dartmouth. A total of 116 classmates (at last count) showed up for the gala festivities, along with 87 wives and some eighteen or twenty children. Among the several members of the class who are still bachelors, one, Charlie Nay or, arrived (as is his custom) with a young and beautiful guest.

It was '35's biggest reunion to date. The classes of '34 and '36 had their reunions scheduled for the same weekend; thus, '35ers had a chance not only to visit and review friendships with their own classmates, but also with old friends who were a year behind and ahead of them at Dartmouth.

Thanks to the fine preparatory plans made by the co-reunion chairmen, Doug Ley and Charlie Gow, and their assistants, CharlieNayor, Fran Chase, Ken Kurson, Don Cameron and Bob McLellan, the gathering of the clan was a lively, pleasurable and inspiring one for everyone.

The masses - Middle Mass, South Mass, North Mass - were given over to '35ers and their families, and the '35 tent was pitched in front of Middle Mass, just behind the Administration Building. Much of the informal socializing took place here in the tent, but members of the class also spent many hours strolling about the campus to inspect old landmarks and new college installations. The weather was perfect - not a drop of rain the whole weekend.

Scheduled activities began in pur tent late Friday afternoon with a cocktail party. This was followed by ail ample buffet dinner, catered by the Inn and served in the tent, so that those who wished could get to the reception at the President's home at 8:30 thai evening. Mr. and Mrs. Dickey and College Secretary Sid and Mrs. Hayward received in the lovely gardens behind the President's home. An alumni dance was held at College Hall later that evening.

Saturday morning started with breakfast served in the class tent, and after that the class business meeting was held at Baker Library. Then the class picture was taken on the College Green, and following this most of us went to the large luncheon held at the gym for all alumni and wives. It was an informal buffet, and a large gang ate outside under the trees.

Following the luncheon, the General Alumni Meeting - the 101st in the history of the College - was held on the top floor of the gym, the same place where we used to take our final examinations. President Dickey gave a short talk, and our old friend Ernest Martin Hopkins, now President Emeritus of the College, was called to the platform to extend his greetings to the alumni.

A '35 cocktail party was held late that afternoon in College Hall, and following this a class dinner in Commons, at which Prof. Herb West '22 gave a short talk. Following the dinner, some '35ers went to the Sabrina Fair production put on by the Players, while others watched some unique '35 movies taken by our motion picture expert Dr. Phelps Lauria.

Dartmouth reunions, it occurred to this correspondent, have taken on more family characteristics (with wives and children included in the activities) and are less the drink-em-up affairs they were back in the years when we were at Hanover. Most of the members of our delegation attended the various meetings and parties that were scheduled, but there was no pressure to adhere to any organized plan, and plenty of free time was provided for people to do whatever they wished. Paul Rogers and Fran Chase were seen heading for the tennis courts. Hall Colton, Cramp Carrick, Ed Freeman and HowieCroninger, among others, got in some golf at the Hanover golf course, and a number of parties went swimming at Lake Morey and other near-by watering places. Many '35 men looked up favorite old professors or townspeople for quiet dinners, and couples like the Naramores, Nevins, Hedlers and Sherwoods took a few days either before the reunion weekend or afterwards to stop at favorite New England vacation spots.

Saturday night turned out to be the most lively evening, with most of the members of '35, along with many visitors from '34 and '36, gathering in our tent for a song-and-beer-fest which lasted into the small hours. There was a real old-fashioned jam session by old Barbary Coasters featuring our own LowieBaas on the sax and clarinet and Jack Gilbert '34 on the upright. An unexpected finale was provided around 5 a.m. when a West Indian appeared out of the musical ether, turned upside down two large galvanized iron buckets used for chipped ice, and went to work on them with a couple of drumsticks. He was accompanied by Fred Raymond at the piano, and Sven Karlen strumming an eight-foot bass fiddle. This trio provided a mixed and unique sort of native rhythm for square dancing in front of Middle Mass. This activity didn't break up until around 7 in the morning, when Karlen was reported to have gone to bed with the bass fiddle.

One interesting statistic reported over the weekend was, that beginning next fall, six members of the class will have sons entering Dartmouth! They are: Harry Ferries, BillHands, Bob Lewis, Norris Nims, Willie Ogg and Phil Wilson.

Another vital statistic which also brings' home the irrevocable passing of the years is the fact that 42 members of '35 who started Dartmouth with us are now dead. Six of these - Bart Anderson, Forest Bunker, Ralph Colby,Wallace Dow, Chester Edwards and Dick McKnight - have passed away since the reunion five years ago.

At the business meeting Saturday morning, it was revealed that the increasing responsibilities of various class officers make it advisable 'to revamp the class organization to make it more effective. A new plan, unanimously adopted by the class, creates the position of "chairman of the executive committee" who will be class manager. It also calls for a larger, more active executive committee, which will be responsible for the appointment of all officers and committees. The following executive committee was elected at the meeting: Art Bamford, Reg Bankart, Francis Chase, Sid Diamond, Ted Harbaugh, Bo Kreer, Doug Ley, Milburn McCarty, Bob Naramore, Ed Offutt, Herb Shuttleworth, Dave Smith, Ted Steele, John Wallace and Bucks Weil.

The committee in turn selected the following class officers to serve from 1955 to 1960: Chairman of the Executive Committee, RegBankart; Secretary, Milburn McCarty; Treasurer, Francis Chase; Class Agent, ted Harbaugh; and Memorial Fund Chairman, TedSteele.

At the end of the class meeting, a rising vote of thanks and gratitude was given to RegBankart for his loyal and efficient service as class secretary, and Art Bamford stepped forward to present him, on behalf of the class, with a handsome print of Dartmouth College. Special thanks for their fine help also was extended to Class Agent Ed Offutt, Memorial Fund Chairman Sid Diamond (who was ill and unable to attend the reunion), and to the three '35 members of the Dartmouth Administration, George Colton, Bob Hage, and DonCameron, for their activities on behalf of '35 at Hanover.

Below you'll find the complete list of those who attended reunion.
