Since World War II (and even before to an extent) Coach Tom Dent has moulded Dartmouth's soccer teams into some of the most powerful in the East. This year, time and other factors have caught up and the Dartmouth booters, having lost their first two engagements, seem headed for a relatively poor season.

The team opened the 1956 season with a 4-2 defeat at Penn and then dropped a second Ivy League game, 4-1, to Brown. Despite eight lettermen in the lineup, the Indians are relying on sophomores and inexperienced players in several key spots, including goal. This, plus a real lack of depth, is chiefly the reasons for these early defeats.

Here again the feeling is that the team will grow stronger with each game and could, with the right development, duplicate last year's record of six wins and five defeats and fourth place in the league.

The current Dartmouth lineup has sophomore Randy Malin at goal and the veterans Bob Holland and Bob Vostal at fullback. Sophomore Fritz Arens teams with letterman Tony Gittes at halfback, with Captain Cal Perry at center half. Ron Chilcote and sophomore Jim Kennedy are at the outside posts, with Bill Pinkerton and Bob Googins inside, and Butch Waid at center forward.

Both Penn and Brown had veteran teams, rated stronger than Dartmouth, and their team play was more polished. Dartmouth performed well on an individual basis in both games, but careless mistakes, an apparent lack of coordination and inability to come up with a strong, smoothly working offensive unit were the factors responsible for the defeats.

The Dartmouth crew started its centennial year this fall with an enlarged boathouse. Thebay to the right provides eight racks, doubling the storage space for the crew's shells.
