The secretary yields space this month to the editor of the MAGAZINE for two reasons: (1) to accommodate the Alumni Fund repoit, and (2) printable information about classmates is at a low ebb and the information well needs filling up.
The largest attended and most enjoyable class dinner in recent years in Boston at the time of the Harvard game took place this year. The following nineteen classmates were present: Ken Clark, Josh Clark, Chamberlain, Spin Norris, Farrell, Crooks, Jordan, Mayo, Seaver, Wheeler, Briggs, Learoyd, Lovejoy, Smith, Dick Stevens, Sanderson, Whitman, French and Burleigh. All seem to be holding their age well and surely make the most of such opportunities to chat and learn what each other is doing. Most are maintaining the even tenor of their ways, some still actively carrying on in their work or profession, others retired but still finding outside activities which really puts them in the class of semiretired. Ed and Grace Chamberlain have just returned from a long auto trip to the West Coast and back. They reported having seen Capt. Larry Odlin in California. Charlie Jordan seemed to be in the pink of condition after an enjoyable summer on the Maine coast. Ralph Whitman was back after missing several of the last meetings. Bob Sanderson was leaving shortly for his home in Florida. His two sons are now attending the University of New Hampshire. Hen Seaver brought the sad news that he had just learned that TimVaitses had died in South America about a year ago of a brain cancer. Henry Smith has moved to his old family home at 402 Main Street, Medfield, Mass. In addition to this group at dinner there were seen in the class section at the football game the next day. BudSchell and Stan Macomber. Enthusiastic words might be written about all the others not specifically referred to above but it suffices to say that they are all carrying on in their normal ways.
Further information about Tim Vaitses is being sought and his death explains the absence of word from him for nearly two years. His last letter was dated December 16, 1954. At that time he wrote, "As you may know I am on the last lap and should be back in New England in July. We hope to spend the closing two weeks at Whitefield. My 45th reunion will probably be in Boston on the eve of the Harvard game — Until then — all of the best to you both, Angela and Tim." We all recall the pleasure we had in welcoming them to our 40th reunion, the first Tim had attended in many years. Although he had spent all of his adult life in South America, he was one of our most loyal classmates.
A letter from Bernard McCarthy, whom his Boston classmates have been seeing in the past few years, comes from the Westfield Sanitarium in Westfield, Massachusetts and is as follows: "I am here and in all probability will be here for the rest of the year, at least - tuberculosis. The doctor — an Indian from India, says treatments take about a year here. Well I am going on my third month. If you see any of the fellows at the D-H game and they inquire for me, I would be glad if you tell them I am here and will be glad to hear from them."
Many of the class have been returning to Hanover this fall to return to visit that fountain of their youth. The Fred Harris's were here at the time of the New England Council's eleventh winter sports conference in Hanover. Fred was awarded the Council's Silver Bowl for outstanding contributions to New England skiing. The Council referred to the Dartmouth Outing Club as the first major development in recreational and college skiing and stated further to the fact that Fred represented the United States in 1930 at a meet which brought the 1932 Winter Olympic games to Lake Placid, New York. WalterReilly is a frequent visitor to Hanover. He has just been named chairman of the board of the Union National Bank of Lowell. FrancisOua at the same time was elected to the board. Another classmate and wife who never fail to make annual visits to Hanover are Ed andEthel Poole who spent an enjoyable week here during the height of the fall foliage. SamAronowit7, and Pat Hurley have been taking in the fall football games. If others have been in town and notice has not been given, it is because they failed to ring in at headquarters.
Leo Caproni announces that he and his associates have moved their offices to newly equipped and modernized quarters at 132 Temple Street, New Haven 10, Conn.
