This column comes out of the typewriter shortly after the Yale game, which was viewed by your editor. It was a hard-luck game, with the Green plagued by injuries and bad breaks. This morning's New York Times reports that Mike Brown, out of action since early in Saturday's fracas, was apparently knocked-out by one of our own sophomores, who hit him accidentally with an elbow, while taking a hand-off. The weekend, nevertheless, was enjoyable," and although this writer only ran into a few '53s, many were said to be in New Haven.
Among those talked to on street corners briefly were: Gil Shapiro, now in his last year at Tufts Medical School; Art Thomas, now a member of the Connecticut Bar, but about to be snatched from his legal tomes by Uncle Sam; and Rog Williams, who murmured something about being at Newport now.
As for the mail, there is a little this month, but these columns will be of more interest if you step-up your correspondence a little.
A note from Alin and Nicki Gruber reports the birth of Karin Ann on September 24 in West Lafayette, Ind. John Dickason writes that, now an ex-serviceman, he is working in South Glens Falls, N. Y., for the Scott Paper Company, but was wondering for a while if "this civilian life is all it's cracked up to be." Seems he and Bobbi moved to Glens Falls, but somehow all their furniture got routed to Camden, N. J., and had to be tracked down by the state police. He says for 48 hours, NOBODY, but nobody, knew where this "AWOL van" was. John reports that John Springer was to take the matrimonial step October 13, in Cooksburg, Penn. Other than that, Dickason reports only his nearness to Hanover (100 miles), and his hopes that he can get back for a few games.
Lefty Leavens reports an early autumn in Cleveland, where he and Doris "live in a small hilly, rural town - the closest to New England type life we could find, and we fully appreciate its beauty especially with fall arriving."
Got a long, newsy letter from Pete Reich, which I reproduce, without the handwriting scrawls, as follows:
I m still in Everett, Wash., working for Simpson Paper Co. as a sales trainee. The company sent me to Pittshurgh to study six weeks at Carnegie Tech to learn about printing, since most of our Papers are sold to printers. Most beneficial summer, and I learned a lot. Hated to miss the great fishing, water skiing, swimming, camping, and sailing, that we have out here, though.
saw Coos Komara at Pittsburgh Dartmouth picnic. He's crashing into the brokerage business. Whlie in New York, I got together with Jack Patten, who is still working for McGraw Hill Publishing. Jack is doing wery well with his company - sells advertising in the New England area and hits all the high spots, "Rahars," etc. - and don't miss a Big Green football game. Just missed Dave Florence who had been in N Y but was sent to San Francisco with I.B.M
Ted Spiegel, Dick Blum and I made Tom Tracer's wedding on July 28 in Cleveland. Tom married a very attractive girl from that city named Althea McDonough. I had planned to head back to Pittsburgh after the reception to study for a big Monday final exam, but my "friends" got me somewhat blasted. I did get to the books after dinner on Sunday. Dick is working for his father making bakery utensils. Ted is still in the Navy.
Received word that Dootch Henderson was out ot the Air Force and at home in N. Y. I spent an hour with a pleasant phone operator (over the telephone) locating his new phone number since his family recently moved. After going through Alumni Records, 3 post offices, a police dept., and a light and power company, I came up with his number only to learn that he wasn't expected in from Los Angeles for a few days. Just in case some of you want to get hold of Dootch on Long Island, here's the hard-found poop: Robert Henderson, 7 Overhill Rd., Flower Hill, L. I., Manhasset 7-5113.
Last Saturday night '53 had a fair reunion at Sand Point Officers Club in Seattle. Present were Bob Callender, who is stationed here in the Navy, Bob Kendall, salesman for Burroughs; Brad Edgerton, purchase agent for Scott Paper in Everett, and myself. By coincidence, there were six others present from the Big Green. Four were undergrads and two are heading back for a fifth year at Tuck. Absent was Jay Kulp, who had just set out on a two-year cruise on a sailboat for Mexico, S. America, Tahiti, and Hawaii. He is one of a crew of four. Bill Borman, working for General Insurance, couldn't make it either since he had to go to Canada to meet his fiancee's brother. Brad introduced Bill to a girl he had been taking out during the winter and Bill announced" their engagement last month. Edgerton is trying to get even by snaking my girl friends. His attempts were futile. (The foregoing was a paid political announcement - Editor.)
Bill and Jo Ann tie the knot in December. Another that couldn't get to our reunion was DickWerner, working as a geologist for Kennicutt. Talk about being back in the woods - the only way he gets in and out from his work is by company-hired helicopter. He's about 25 miles in the woods outside of Darrington, Wash.
I missed Blake Hering's wedding in Portland, much to my dismay. After a long romance with Joan Gamble (Smith '53), they made it binding.
Ran into Volney "Hoopey" Richmond last spring at a party in Seattle. He's married and had just gotten out of the Air Force. Gene Gabianelli gave me a call in May; he was on his way back East for discharge after a tour of duty in Alaska. Gabby hopes to be at Michigan Law this Fall.
Come November, my training program termnates at the mill and I head for our sales office in San Francisco. That should be good duty.
The clipping file: Herb Solow and spouse announce birth of Jody Fran, October 2, in Mount Vernon, N. Y.; Bill Vitalis attached now to the instruction staff at Deerfield Academy. At the Hanover Inn recently: Mr. and Mrs. John Springer (October 16), Gerald Avanozian (September 16); Mr. and Mrs. RonaldLazar (September 17); and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Bingham (October 1). Howie Clery married September 22 at St. Cecelia's Church, Boston to Constance Benjamin. Paul Paganucci was best man. John Boyle now teaching at the Concord, Mass., public schools.
John M. Morris married in Westport, Conn., September 15 to Lucille List, a graduate of Manhattanville College. They'll live in Hanover. Dick Davison engaged to Louise Kerstetter, of Riverside, Pa. Louise is from Penn State, and completed a med-tech course at Jefferson Medical College. Bill Burns now teaching at Brighton H.S., Newport, Vt.
Weyman Lundquist married September 15 to Joan Durrell, in Worcester, Mass. Joan is a Wellesley girl, the happy groom now is at JAG at Walter Reed here in Washington. And Scrib Fauver married to Ann Babbit, Mt. Holyoke alumna.
Interesting questionnaires which LeftyLeavens has forwarded on to me:
Anton Philips: Now doing military service in Holland, at present platoon commander of an Intelligence and Reconnaissance platoon. Stationed near Eindhoven. Entered August '55, will leave May '57. Worked one year with Moral Re-Armament both in Europe and U.S. Saw some of BudCherry and Charlie Haws. Later joined Moral ReArmament World Mission with Musical: The Vanishing Island Through Asia: Japan, Philippines, Thailand, Burma, Formosa, Honolulu, Ceylon, and India. In many countries, received by Presidents and Prime Ministers. Up to 190 people in our party, and we had the privilege of being flown by MATS airplanes. I do not know whether I shall be able to be there for the reunion. It's a bit far.... Had the privilege of having President and Mrs. Dickey to our home in Holland this Spring. Had a luncheon with them and my parents. It was wonderful to see them again after so many years!!
Abdul Bahrani reports address as c/o 408-84 King Faisal First St., Baghdad, Iraq. Wife's maiden name: Margaret C. Whiting, Royal Oak, Mich.; one child, Neda Jean. Abdul's now an "Ass't Project Engineer."
Ed Boyer writes he saw Bill Gilges out of the Navy, now socializing quite heavily in Kansas City, Mo., where Ed is with Lever Bros. Bill Brown writes from San Francisco, where he is an Ensign, Civilian Engineering Corps, U. S. Navy, since July '55, and a design officer for Officer in Charge of Construction, Philippines. Also says: "Saw Jack Avril here about three months ago, on his way back to the states on an AKL. I'm doing a little civil, mechanical, electrical and business thrown in - $40 million last year."
Ray Alexander writes "sitting in class at Gunter AFB, Ala., having a fifteen-week course in Med. Administration. Got an M.S. in Hospital Administration from Columbia in June."
John Dodge writes from the School of Ho tel Administration, Cornell. And Bill Borman tells the rest of his love story: fiancee is Joanne Gale, Abbotsford, British Columbia. Brad Edgerton will be best man. Fiancee is at the U. of Washington. Bill's job schedules him to be a sales representative by February, '58.
And that's it. Take care, until next month.
