With the ending of the football reunion season, now the class dinner circuit starts. The New York contingent has already had a first get-together on October 10 and is planning a stag affair with '37 and '39 for the first week in December. Later in the spring there is to be another session with the wives, as was done so successfully last year.
Those organizers of functions who want to have news or notice in this column in advance must get word to me before the first of the month preceding the one in which they want publicity. Copy, for example, for this issue went in the first of November.
Attending the October Meeting in New York were: Woodman, Mays, Reeves, Johnson, Herrick, Pickering, Richmond, Colton, Frick, and Duckworth - mostly all regulars who show up faithfully every time.
Last month I briefly reported on Dick Keresey's new position as associate general counsel of Esso Standard Oil Company; now I am in receipt of a rather full treatment of same. The release traces Dick's career from Columbia Law School, where he was on the board of editors of the Columbia Law Review, through four years of Navy service, including Guadalcanal, New Georgia, Bougainville, and Choiseul Island. He left the service with the rank of commander (USNR, Ret.).
For seven years after leaving the Navy he was associated with the New York law firm of Cravath, Swaine, and Moore. He is a former vice-president and general attorney of E. R. Squibb & Sons and served, as noted last month, as assistant to the executive vice-president in charge of overseas operations and assistant to the president of W. R. Grace & Co.
Merrell Condit, my predecessor in the admissions office in Hanover and colleague in the boarding-school profession is now on the faculty of the Harley School in Pittsford, N. Y. Merrell is a veteran of the Nichols School in Buffalo, Cranbrook in Detroit, Peddie, and the Darrow School in New Lebanon, N. Y. At Harley he will direct the testing program as well as the usual faculty duties. He has done graduate work at Colgate and the University of Buffalo.
From Bridgeport (Conn.) comes word that Dr. Paul Ambrose has returned to civilian practice after a stint in the Navy of two years as chief of the medical department of the Chelsea Naval Hospital and the South Weymouth Naval Air Station in Massachusetts. Paul entered service in July of 1954 as a lieutenant commander and was promoted the next year to full commander.
Also in Navy connections is Don Guy, the peripatetic newsman of the AP (executive photo editor at Boston), who is now off to the Antarctic, "Operation Deep Freeze II." Don is a veteran of the Rutland Herald.
Scott Runkle has been appointed director of the Washington office of the Hamilton Wright Organization, public relations representatives for many foreign governments. He will be located in the National Press Building. The company maintains headquarters in Rockefeller Center and has branch offices in Caracas, Venezuela; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Bogota, Colombia; and Rome, Italy. Until recently he was director of public relations for the Economic Development Administration at the San Juan offices.
After graduating from Dartmouth, Runkle attended the Ecole des Sciences Politiques in Paris. He served as a Lieutenant Colonel on General Bradley's staff during the war, and later was a correspondent for Time Magazine before entering public relations work in Washington.
Welcome word from headquarters in Hanover is to keep this screed to its most concise point this month in order to permit the listing of Alumni Fund contributors. It is well such is the order of the day, since the above completely exhausts the shoe box for this time. Unless more material arrives on the Harlem Division of the good old New York Central, I shall be forced again to manufacture false news and then run corrections to fill the space. If you know anything "juicy" about another '38er, lets spill it here rather than let "Confidential" have it.
