Last month's Notes were hardly in the mail when we received a clipping about SqueekRedding's wife, Loretta, to this effect: Loretta Clarke Redding has recently been elected Alumnae Association President at Radcliffe College, Cambridge, Mass. She is a member of the Radcliffe Class of 1929 and was, a short time ago, chairman of the Radcliffe Alumnae Fund (incidentally, this occurred while Squeek was still Class Agent). In addition to her regular duties, and by virtue of her office, she sits with the Trustees of the College. Our con- gratulations and best wishes to you, Loretta.
We have only recently heard that Bob Carr spoke, several months ago, on the basic liberties of the American people and how the investigative power of legislatures impinges upon them, at a two-session series of public discussion meetings concerned with individual liberty and constitutional democracy, which were called Forums in Freedom, in the House of Representatives in Concord, N.H.
Harry Baehr has been named chief editorial writer of the New York Herald Tribune, it was announced March 8 by Ogden R. Reid, president and editor. Harry joined the HeraldTribune in 1937 as a feature writer, became an editorial writer in 1940 and was named assistant chief editorial writer in 1952. As many of you know, he has been a regular contributor to the Herald Tribune Sunday BookReview and is the author of The New YorkTribune Since the Civil War.
The bulletin board of the Hanover Inn has recently indicated that the following '29ers had the good fortune to be in town: TrunkieBrittan and wife, John Laffey, Bob Friend and wife, Bill Andres, Charley King and wife, Duke Barto, and Tal Babcock and wife. With good luck, no papers to correct, and a reasonable facsimile of good health, your scribe and wife hope, also, to visit the Hanover Plain for the meetings of the Class Secretaries early in May. We look forward to the possibility that the Hanover spring will be "bustin' out all over!"
Frank Headley, Denville (N.J.) Township magistrate and an attorney, was sworn in on April 1 as deputy county clerk. Frank hopes to continue as magistrate, a post he has held for twenty years, although he is required by state statute to cease practising law in the courts.
Tom Maynard, former teacher and coach in Kennebunk, Rumford, Massachusetts and New Hampshire schools, and principal of Wells and Farmington High Schools, now with the L.G. Balfour Co., is seeking the Democratic nomination for the Maine House of Representatives from Portland in the June primaries. We especially wish him good luck in this effort since his defeat in a bid for the Portland School Board last December.
Wes Nord, vice president and secretary of Union National, Inc., in Jamestown, N.Y., has been doing a bang-up job as chairman of industrial groups in the fund-raising campaign of the Southern Chautauqua County Red Cross Chapter.
Herb Fish is back from Japan, lives at Turkey Hill Rd. (south), Westport, Conn., and commutes in to Caltex Oil in New York, and says he "supervises France, Switzerland, etc., from a desk - plus occasional trips."
Carl Norden, stationed for a considerable time with NATO in Paris, is now with the Department of State in Washington, D. C. He reports the addition of twin girls to the family last July, making it three.
Herb Wollison reports that he is back in Youngstown, Ohio, living at 112 Fairway Drive and with the Commercial Shearing & Stamping Co., Logan Ave. Herb says that he has seen Dick Owsley, Dr. Slim Jim McKelvey and Fred Ingram and "they're all doing fine."
Jim Loeb writes in from Saranac Lake, N.Y., where he is a Dartmouth man co-owner of a daily newspaper - the Adirondack DailyEnterprise. He apologizes for being a little late in his reply, as he has to work late a little more often as publisher, editor and business manager, since a Yale man co-owner has taken a leave of absence as press secretary of a Princeton man who would like to be President of the United States.
Al Downing, living at 2777 Alvingroom Ct., Oaklands, Calif., reports his headquarters is still with Air Reduction at 1485 Park Ave., Emeryville, Calif., and the contrasting bit of information that his son is now in his first year at Oakland Junior College and daughter has started in the first grade, this year.
Bill Keyes, who looked mighty good when we saw him for a brief moment in New York last fall, reports that his new home address is 513 Knight Way, La Canada, Calif.
Bill Morgan reports "the change in home address means that I have gone further into hock and bought me a new home" (you're not alone, Bill!). The new address is: Clubway, Rumson, New Jersey.
Dick Kimball reports a new business address of 89 East Main St. and a new home address of 700 West Main St. - both in Meriden, Conn.
Franklin Shores reports a change of company name to Hathaway Electronics, Inc., at the same address in Cambridge, but a change of home address to South Acton, Mass.
We have heard from Larry Lougee that he and Mary are making plans to host another '29 Dinner at the Officers Club on Governors Island, New York, on Friday evening, May 25. Mark this date down, those of you who are nearby and all of you - no matter how far away — if there's any chance that you might be in New York on that date. It'll be a wonderful party!
