Greetings again.... We hope that wherever you are located April showers (or should that be snow and slush) have given way to May flowers, sunshine and good cocktail parties. The first weekend in May will find us trekking up to Hanover for the annual Class Officers' meeting: it should be an enjoyable three days, but the possible need for 4-foot rubber boots to navigate through a late slush and duckboard season has us worried. Jottings from Hanover, however, tell of the recent Hanover Inn visits of "Gus" Goss, Bill Beck and EmilFrohlick, so we trust one can maneuver in and around the area with some facility.
The first Alumni Fund progress reports are out and '53 is off to a very heartening start with a total of $351 for 27 contributors — or a $13.00 average per man. Let us hit this campaign early and hard: "I think this year we can move from the lowest to the highest rung in the Little Green Derby. Are you pulling your share of the load?
THE MARRIED SET.... Way back on last October 17 the privacy of Denny and YvonneSpeidel's Endicott, N.Y., home was invaded by the arrival of a prospective Class of 1974 member, Denny Frederick Jr., shortly after midnight. Needless to say, life hasn't been the same since for the Speidel household, now located "at Ft. Devens, where "Papa" holds down an important Army position. Prior to this duty, Denny had been doing Army liaison work with IBM Corp., a very choice billet.... Going even further back - a year ago, in fact - Bill Hutchison traveled "back country" to Highlands, N.C., to participate as godfather at the christening of Thomas Tudor Chambers, the second child for Isa and Tony. The Chambers have since moved to Chicago, where Tony and his dad are in the lumber business. The proud godfather is a prospective banking executive in the Newark area.
Out in Missouri on the 15th of March the arrival of perhaps the most distinguished sounding '53 offspring, Albert James Brewster IV put "Sox" and Lois officially in the "mommy and daddy" class. Lt. A.J. Brewster III USA is located at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. And our last papoose entry for this issue is a very cute young lass, Karen Melissa, born to Joan and Tim Reed in late March. The announcement of this addition to the Reed clan comes from Phoenix, Ariz., where Tim is enrolled at the American Institute for Foreign Trade at Thunderbird Field. The Institute concerns itself primarily with techniques of international business and a study of the languages and characteristics of foreign nations. Tim is specializing in Latin American affairs.
In commencing this month's news with birth announcements, it was not our intention to put the cart before the horse, so without further delay let's glance at the matrimonial picture. Gardner and Jane Brookings (the former Jane Watson of Rye, N.Y.) found a double purpose in celebrating New Year's Eve this past winter, as it marked their first day as Mr. and Mrs. as well as the birth of a new year. Gardner and Mrs. B., a Russell Sage alumna, have taken up residence in Boston where he is a Lt. (jg) in the Navy's C. E. Corps. On February 11, wedding bells pealed from the Resurrection Lutheran Church, Flushing, N.Y., where Lois Leifsen of that town and Emi'l Schnell exchanged wedding vows. Emil has been associated with the Western Electric. Co. since his discharge from the Marine Corps last fall.
On that same date Lt. (jg) El Clark Jr. took Dona Ellen Ames as his better half in a quiet ceremony in the bride's Portland, Me., home. El and Dona, a graduate of Mary Hitchcock Hospital, intend to make their home in California, following the groom's release from the Navy this June. In early March at the Hillel Foundation Center, Purdue University, AlinGruber and his hometown (Lynn, Mass.) sweetheart, Elsa Bloom, finally spliced the all-important wedding knot. Al is doing graduate work in industrial psychology on the Purdue campus; his bride attended both Tufts and Boston University.
And then, of course, in the natural order of things there were those classmates whose imminent departure from bachelorhood was signaled by recent betrothal announcements. This group included: Bob Nessen, 3rd yr. Harvard Law School, to Susan Joy Weil of New York City, '54 Swarthmore graduate.... Lt. (jg) Bob Purse USNR to a former University of New Hampshire student, Miss Jean Everett of Concord, N.H. If we are not mistaken, "Possum" is still serving aboard a Newport-based destroyer, but should be returning to civilian life shortly And lastly, from distant Berlin, Germany, Frank Lee, stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army, to Lieselotte Wiesler of that city.
MILITARY MISCELLANY....An Army news release tells of 2nd Lt. Paul Howe's successful completion of the basic course at Infantry School, Ft. Benning, Ga. Another clipping reports that Pvt. Dick Nunley has been assigned to Fort Sill, Okla., for artillery surveyor training; Dick joined forces with Uncle Sam last September on his return to this country from two years of study at Oxford.
From Mobile, Ala., to various "exotic" African outposts and back is the new flying run for "Fly-boy" Tom Duke, Lt. USAF. Tom is stationed at Brookley Field in Mobile and is flying for MATS. Over in the Orient, StevePearsoll USA and Bob Henderson, Lt. USAF are preparing to ba de sayonata to Japan and the military life in the next couple of months, after apparently a very memorable and pleasant tour of duty in the "land of enchantment." At the same time, our "money-bags" DickCalkins will be bringing his tour of duty in Hawaii to a close. Some people really get tough duty. But now we just have time for a little....
NEWS IN BRIEF....Dave and Sue Berry (plus youngsters Dave and Barby) are free of Marine regimentation and back in the academic life while "papa" attends Columbia Graduate School. Jim Coleman and his recent bride Kit are also reportedly attending Grad School at Columbia, following Jim's completion of his senior year in Hanover this past January.... Tom Dyal, another ex-Marine, is now working with his dad in a New Jersey enterprise E. W. Kohut Brokerage Agency announced the promotion of Turner Austin to the position of supervisor of its Long Island Agency.... Brad Edgerton is finding work on the West Coast for Simpson Paper Co. very much to his liking. The same goes for another Simpson trainee, Pete Reich.
That, I guess, covers the '53 picture tor this month. Keep the letters coming and don't procrastinate. Send your Alumni Fund donation in today.
