Imagine my pleasant surprise a few weeks ago when I read my local weekly newspaper, The East Orange Record, and learned more about Bill Hoffmann's many contributions to life. Bill was elected president of the Child Guidance Clinic of the Oranges and Maplewood. This is a local service that is supported by appropriations from the municipalities and private citizens. Bill is vice president of the Fidelity Union Trust Co. of Newark, N. J. He is on the Board of Trustees of the Orange Memorial Medical Center; he is a member of the East Orange Board of Education; treasurer and trustee of the Youth Consultation Service of Newark; treasurer of Junior Achievement of Essex and Hudson Counties; past president of Newark Junior Chamber of Commerce, P.T.A. and Northern New Jersey Dartmouth Club. He has four children, John, Anne, Jimmy, and Ellen, and of course his wife, the former Pat Baldwin, a loyal Dartmouth and Hood College booster.
A conference was organized this spring by Jim Whipple for deans of adult education at the university level. This conference took place in Chicago where Jim is a research associate at the Center for the Study of Liberal Education for Adults. The Center, which Jim joined after obtaining his Ph.D. at Western Reserve, is concerned with the task of supplying new leadership and new information for the liberal education of adults. This means fact finding, research and evaluation of curriculum and material for adult education as differing from encouraging the participation by adults in formal and standard educational courses. The work of the Center comes under the Fund for Adult Education, which is supported by the Ford Foundation. Jim and his wife, Florence, live at 1410 East 56th St., Chicago.

Some news from the West Coast brings us up to date on Al Bunker who has been "long time no see." Al is the assistant district sales manager for Standard Oil Co. of California in Seattle. The last time I heard from Al he had the fire hose pouring water in the general area of the third floor of Hitchcock Hall. At Berkeley, Calif., Bob Pumphrey has decided to go into the ministry. He is studying at the Central Theological Seminary. This is an interesting change of pace for Bob. I believe upon his ordination he will become, with the exception of Reverend Jim Lancaster, the only man of the cloth from '36. At Los Angeles Al Rader is copy chief at the advertising agency Hill and Christopher, 1709 W. 8th St. Al's home is 5114 Noble Ave., Sherman Oaks, Calif. Way down the coast at San Diego, Comdr. Sherman Peabody heads the Eye Dept. at the U. S. Navy Hospital.

Someone sent me a clipping from theMaiden (Mass.) Independent Republican including a picture of Henry Mascarello. It saysin part:
Over 150 persons attended the 54th annual banquet of the Universalist Men's Club Tuesday at the parish house of the First Universalist Church, and heard Henry J. Mascarello, Maiden High graduate and former Maplewood resident, now executive director of the United Prison Association of Massachusetts, talk on the highlights of progress in the Massachusetts correctional system. Mascarello, a noted criminologist and now a resident of Lexington, was employed for a time by the Massachusetts correctional system. For the past sixteen years, he has held the position of executive director of the Prison Association. His work has kept him in close contact with conditions in the prisons, and his talk last night was a reflection of his observations on the progress made in our correctional system, especially over the past few years. Mascarello, in addition to his duties with the Prison Association, is also a part-time member of the Tufts University faculty, where he teaches criminology.

The Alumni Fund drive for 1956 closes at midnight June 30.1 hope you are all on board by now, but if not telegram your contribution to Kirk Liggett at once. Let's have '36 win the Green Derby this year and not lose it for the lack of one contributor as we did last year when Pete Fitzherbert was out head Class Agent.
If you are in New York this summer please give me a ring at Ox 5-1720. This is my new number, inasmuch as I joined the advertising department of Scholastic Magazines on April first. The office is at 33 West 42. I am representing Co-ed, a completely new magazine for teen-age girls. Co-ed is growing fast, as the baby in the Scholastic stable of eleven separate publications in the youth market.
Congratulations go to Earl Copp on his marriage March 17 to Florence Stevenson of Waterbury, Conn. The ceremony took place in the Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. All '36ers of course know Uncle Earl is our editor of Tithe and also editor of the Phillipsburger in Phillipsburg, N. J. Having met Florence at Dot and KarlWolff's open house after the Yale game last fall, I can vouch for it that Earl's the lucky one to end the "whirlwind courtship of .seven years" in this way.
After each of a number of football games last fall, some classmate volunteered his home for an open house for '36ers. This was a happy procedure as many of you know. For example George Tillinghast played host in Providence after the Brown game, and Eleanorand Eddie Chamberlain in Hanover after the Harvard game, Dot and Karl Wolff in New Haven, and Charan and Vic Sabary at Princeton. A few classmates felt left out last year because they didn't know about the parties. However, I assure you everyone is invited. Whether any other classmates want to volunteer as hosts for next fall is unknown now and our next issue of the Alumni Notes won't be published until October. So if you go to any of the early fall games there'll probably be a '36 party somewhere, but I can't give any more information on it at this writing.
For any of you fishermen who have not planned your summer vacation, how would you like to go to a lake overflowing with landlocked salmon? It's in northern Vermont. Ludwig Zuber is willing to share this tip with you, for he has a summer home on Crystal Lake (Post Office, Barton, Vt.) and knows the wealth of those waters. Ludwig and his wife Tanya will serve a libation to any classmate who visits Crystal Lake whether they come to catch a salmon or just to enjoy the scenery and visit. It must be done, however, before Sep- tember 20 when the Zubers go back to Westport, Conn.
Best wishes to you all for a pleasant summer.
A contented ex-secretary, Norb Hofman '36,with his wife Pic and sons Pete and Mike.
