Dr. Kirkland's address was delivered in Webster Hall, May 7, at the College's first Honors Convocation, held to give formal recognition to those Dartmouth undergraduates who have achieved academic distinction. John R. McLane '07, Acting President of the College in the absence of Mr. Dickey, presided at the exercises, and the faculty, in academic robes, occupied the stage after marching from Sanborn House.

Dr. Kirkland is Frank Munsey Professor of American History at Bowdoin College. Now on leave of absence, he is living near Hanover, in Thetford Center, Vt. Dr. Kirkland, who has been a member of the Bowdoin faculty since 1931, is past president of the American Association of University Professors and also of the Economic History Association.
