This secretary starts office with a dearth of information with which to fill this column and some complications of an editorial nature that bade no good for this particular issue.
Now seems like a good time to suggest- I was about to say implore-the members of the Class, their wives, sweethearts, if any, etc., to send in some news - the address is 600 Fifth Avenue, New York 20, N. Y.
A most important event in the life of the College occurred on September 5, 6, and 7. The occasion was the Convocation called to discuss the Great Issues of the Anglo-Canadian-American Community. It was a tremendous affair and I am sure was Dartmouth's proudest as well as greatest hour. Our own Sherm Adams was a featured speaker and received an Alumni Award. On that occasion the following citation was read:
"Sherman Adams '20, we of the Dartmouth fellowship and your neighbors here in New Hampshire know you best. We have watched you with pride since the days when you led the Glee Club, set hiking records on our trails and were president of the Outing Club. Some of us were there When you started as a timber scaler on Ludlow Mountain, Vermont arid' others worked for you when you became plant manager of the and lumber company. We heard your speeches and read your words about the need to conserve our forests. Later, some of us urged you to politics and, when you campaigned, you had our votes. One vote came from a little store within walking distance of Hanover that has a faded' picture of you behind the counter. The storekeeper tacked it up when you were running for governor and has seen no reason to take it down since you went to Washington. 'It isn't easy down there,' he says, 'but Sherm is up to it.' Devoted' son of Dartmouth, farsighted businessman, tireless public servant, the whole Dartmouth fellowship rejoices in presenting this Alumni Award."
Classmates who were in Hanover along, with Rachel and Sherm for the Convocation included: Ellen and Ben Ayres from Worcester, Mass., Elizabeth and Sherry Baketel from Bryn Mawr, Pa., Virginia and EdBowen (Loudonville, N. Y.), Dorothy andBun Harvey from Wellesley Hills, Mass.,. Howard Pullen from Battle Creek, Mich., and Mary and Spence Snedecor (Hackensack, N. J.). Isabelle Morse (Bob's widow) with her son Jimmy and sister, Miss Jacobs, were also among those present.
In the nuptial department, I have news of the recent wedding of Jim Chilcott's daughter, Joan at their place in New Vernon, N. J. A few weeks earlier Jack Jordan's boy, J. Z. Jr., stepped off in Denver.
Word comes from far off Alaska that Warren S. Gault recently started a new job with the Alaska Housing Authority and presently is acting Comptroller. Good luck in the new job, Warrie, and here's hopingthat by now it has been made official. Warrie and Mary are looking forward with great delight to a trip to the States next summer when they will visit with their children and 7 grandchildren, 3 of whom are new to them.
Tom Ainsworth (Captain Thomas H Ainsworth, USN) has finally come to roost in the East. Tom is now stationed in Washington, D. C., and he and Mary have recently completed a new house at 5821 Marbury Road, Bethesda, Md.
Lawrence K. Hussey, who is with the Department of Labor and Industries, Division of Industrial Safety, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, has just been promoted to Senior Industrial Inspector and has been assigned to the branch office at Lawrence, Mass. Eventually Ken and Corinne plan to move to Lawrence, and since Hanover is about an hour away Ken hopes to get up there now and then.
The Greater Concord (N. H.) Council of Churches is to be commended for re-electing Paul G. Richter as President. Congratulations, Paul, on the grand job you are doing.
Recently Russell K. Jones, Vice President of Cunningham & Walsh, New York City, was seen at Elgin Air Force Base getting pointers on jet flying. Thomas M. Dudley, Jr., son of Tom Dudley (Dr. Thomas M.) of Concord, N. H., recently passed his bar exams in Maine and is currently living at Kittery Point, Me.
An excerpt from a letter from Al Frey reads "Now is the time for all good men to get busy and forward their class dues."
