Fortunate is the alumni squad blessed with a senior linebacker ever alert to balk an offensive or recover a fumble. For a score or more years Northern California alumni have thrived under the guidance of gifted Bob Leavens '01, famed as first-in-war, first-inpeace, and last up from the dinner table.

Out of respect for doctor's orders, Bob denied himself inclusion in the notable group honored with Wheelock bowls in the September campus ceremonies. Inasmuch as local , Alumni Councilor Wallick bestowed the accolades at Hanover, the college waived the rules and the annual presentation was made complete here by Council President Guy Wallick '21 in the crowning feature of the local Dartmouth Night celebration. The richly deserved citation of the college was further emphasized by Bob's fellow alumni in a handsomely engrossed award of merit stemming from the text "summa cum laude."

The response was in the traditional Leavens' character; humble, gracious ana impressibly moving. In a further contribution to the evening's pervading inspiration, Bob gave a vivid summary of his first Dartmouth Night ceremonial in the fall of 1897. By happy coincidence, Mortimer L. Crowell of Cleveland, '01 classmate, visiting his son Mort Jr. '29, served as Bob's right bower and supplied the contrasting light touch by summarizing Bob's misdeeds of student days.

Topical notes of the evening were supplied by Councilor Wallick's report of the September Conclave and a lively review and preview by former Dean Lloyd (Pudge) Neidlinger '23, an executive of the International Chamber of Commerce and scheduled for appearances at high-level conferences of notables here at a near-term International Trade Conference.
