Oldest in years (west of the Rockies), yet youthful in ambitions, the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Northern California and Nevada celebrated its seventy-ninth annual business meeting-dinner at San Francisco's University Club, April 1. And again the yearly reports reflected another notable harvest of accomplishments achieved by field hands inoculated with the sustaining cordial known hereabouts as Carl Ward's Enthusiasm.
An excellent cross section of the alumni generations gathered in the club's historic Great Hall, running down the years from Bob Leavens '01 to ten members from the last three graduating classes.
President Ward '32 presented an enlivening array of speakers including Owen Chamberlain '41, Nobel prize winner, and now of the faculty of University of California, and former Dean Joseph McDonald. The reviews of a year distinguished for impressive results were given by Jim Morse '46 on enrollment, Ritchie Smith '26 on the Alumni Coun- cil, and Vince Jones '52 who, aided by DaveSmith '35 and no few others had engineered the entertainment of Dartmouth's rugger team during its publicity-provoking five-game series with Bay Area opponents. Although long accustomed to such news, it was good to hear again that a number of the visitors aim to score more goals in this field after graduation, in fact some would welcome summer jobs hereabouts.
Dean McDonald was in customary happy form and his anecdotes of life behind a dean's desk and summary of current events on the college campus were deeply appreciated. His review was further fortified by Prof. Chamberlain who told of what he learned during a recent Hanover visit.
Officers for the coming year are: President Al Lathrop '28; Vice-President, Bill Abbott '27; Secretary, Abe Winslow '20; Carl Ward '32, treasurer; with a cabinet to be named by President Lathrop at an early date. Secretary Winslow was roundly congratulated on another splendid up-to-date catalog of members recently distributed.
Dean Emeritus Joseph L. McDonald was guest at a recent meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Phoenix. He is shown with several members of the club (1 to r) Bud Brown '25, Jack Huntress '33, club secretary, Bill Miller '51, club president, and George Nelson '55.
