We note with regret that another classmate has left us: Wid Askew died after a short illness. His home was in Skaneateles, N. Y. Your secretary would like to take advantage of this unhappy event to ask each one of you to help us (both the Class and the College) to improve, our records for the major events since you were here on the campus. When you receive your annual greeting, in the form of our attractive birthday card which I send out with both pleasure and hope, won't you take a moment to bring us up to date? I assure you we are interested. Occasionally we are embarrassed not to have much to say when another classmate asks "What do you know about—these days?"
One of our old reliables is Red Newell, out in Singapore, with the First National Bank of New York (as for many years). He corrects an old error (back last March) when I put him down for "twin girls (aged 10)." Turns out this is only one girl - but Red does concede he is surrounded by femininity, including "two amahs to take care of the cleaning and washing" and several female animals of various kinds. The bank is still struggling with the new building which may be completed by the end of the year although "building anything... takes a very long time in this area." Son Ralph is 16 and in his fourth year at Blair Academy and will have a fifth before College.
Here at the Inn, but not seen (alas) by your scribe: The Dick Countrymans, the Dave Campbells, and the John Murphys. Guess I must have the wrong technique to attract them for a brief hello, at least. Rumor has it that Jim White is in town, and if so will try to report successful contact in our next issue. We all hope to have a good report, health-wise. Dick Morin reports having seen son Bill at the Dartmouth Club in New York recently, but not long enough to get a report on the family.
We (Margaret and I) saw only a few at the Harvard game, although others may have been there. The Lamsons, Herseys, and Hayes. Didn't make the Yale game because Margaret developed a painful "stiff neck" the week before. And so my record is unbroken: I've never yet seen Dartmouth beat Yale, and wouldn't have had I been there as planned. See some of you at the Cornell game, I'm sure.
Looking ahead to next year: We have our plans for a Class get-together well in hand already. The two possible home games are October 4 with Holy Cross and October 18 with Penn. The latter seems more likely unless the fall foliage is a major factor, in which case we'd better make it the earlier game. I'd appreciate thoughts you may have, this far in advance. Also, reservations for the motel we have had for the past two years are already being made. Let me (not the motel) know your intentions at once. First come, first reserved. I have already made tentativearrangements for dinner Saturday night that will be an improvement over our experience this year. I plan to talk about this with any of you I see in the near future.
Another step up for Sumner Robinson; recent announcement of his appointment as president of Loomweave Corp. (of Congoleum-Nairn). The firm makes woven floor coverings. Robbie is also managing director and secretary of the Grand Rapids Furniture Guild. His file shows he was formerly with the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Co., Roxbury Carpet Co., National Homes Corp., etc.
Another Sumner - F. Sumner Turner, alias "Genesis," is now Superintendent of Pioneer Valley Regional School, Northfield, Mass. He had been principal of the Northfield School Union since 1949. He won his Master of Education degree from Harvard in 1932. We saw him briefly at a game last year but not this year, so far.
Butts Lamson's daughter, Eleanor, will be married next spring to John Hubner Koenig (Exeter and Yale). The announcement of their engagement was seen in the N. Y. Times for October 20. Eleanor graduated from Dana Hall and Wheaton.
Shep Patterson, well-known Pittsburgh banker, spoke to the Wheeling Association of Credit Men back in September. Topic: "A fresh look at the financial statement." This is a chapter of a larger national association serving to promote credit information and sound business laws. Some may have forgotten that Shep taught here from 1926-1929. He left to go into banking; the National City first and since 1943 with the People's First National Bank and Trust Company in Pittsburgh.
