Unfortunately, the copy for this issue had to be in before the gala Fiftieth Anniversary Annual Dinner on Tuesday evening, January 8. We hope that we can safely say now, before the event, that it proved a great success. In any event, we shall have a full report in the March issue.
By the time you read this you will have received your dues notice for 1957. For each of the past four years at least, we have shown a hearty growth in dues-paying membership. Still, we have yet to sign up 25% of the alumni on our mailing list. This year, we hope not only to crack that percentage but also to sign up an even larger number. The dues are, after all, quite small in view of the return. Let's look at what the few dollars you contribute pay for:
In conjunction with our enrollment workers, we try to interest the best prep and high school seniors in becoming candidates for admission to Dartmouth and to keep them interested in Dartmouth once they have been accepted;
We maintain a Loan Fund in Hanover for needy Philadelphia area undergraduates;
We provide activities for undergraduates during their vacations to bring them into closer contact with, alumni in the area;
We send mailings with regard to certain key social activities to all alumni in the area, whether they pay dues or not;
We hold additional social and athletic activities during the year which are publicized only to dues-paying members simply because we cannot afford the expense of sending every mailing: to all alumni in the area;
We have weekly luncheons at the Dartmouth-Princeton Club, 1223 Locust Street, Philadelphia, Mondays at noon;
Our members have full use of the Club facilities, including other meals and drinks, entertainment of guests, lounges, television, periodicals, etc.
Even a few of the items on the imposing list above are well worth your investment in the Club's nominal dues. We think this is true even for those alumni who are not sufficiently close to central Philadelphia to attend our Monday lunches or to make frequent use of the Club facilities. If you haven't already done so, how about getting out your checkbook now and send in your 1957 investment in Dartmouth in the Greater Philadelphia area.
