The Philadelphia Dartmouth contingent launched its post-vacation program with a Send-Off Dinner for entering freshmen and their fathers from this area on Monday evening, September 8. In all, 43 freshmen, dads, other undergraduates, and alumni were present at the Dartmouth-Princeton Club for the occasion. Hi Allman '55 spoke on undergraduate life; and two color films, "Dartmouth Visited" and "Dartmouth Outdoors," were shown.
On Monday, September 29, 32 alumni and two guests attended the first of our special last-Monday-of-the-month luncheons. StewSteffey '41 read a detailed letter from Head Football Coach Bob Blackman on the team's prospects for the season. Stew Young '50 reported on Perm's showing in their opening debacle with Penn State. In addition, the "1957 Dartmouth Football Highlights" film was shown.
These special last-Monday-of-the-month luncheons will supplement our regular Monday luncheons at the Dartmouth-Princeton Club. It is planned to have an interesting speaker from Hanover or elsewhere, a film, or the like for the special luncheons. Notices will, for the time being at least, be sent to alumni on our dues-paying list.
One comment on summer activities is perhaps appropriate at this time. For the first time in history, it poured rain throughout our annual family picnic at Jim Tindle's '36 Valley Forge Farm. In spite of the dismal weather, over 60 hearty alumni, undergraduates, families, and dates were on hand. Needless to say, those who were there thoroughly enjoyed themselves in spite of the weather.
Alumni moving into the Philadelphia area are reminded that payment of dues in the Philadelphia Club entitles them to full use of the Dartmouth-Princeton Club, Locust and Camac Streets in downtown Philadelphia, in addition to the use of the Club for our Monday luncheons, and also to all mailings with regard to our Club activities. Although we do our best to see that each alumnus moving into the area is contacted with reasonable promptness, there are always some about whom we do not know. Such alumni are urged to contact the Secretary at the address above for further information.
