JOHN L. SULLIVAN '21 of Manchester, N. H., former Secretary of the Navy, and Orvil E. Dryfoos '34 of New York City, Vice President and Assistant to the Publisher of The New York Times, were elected Trustees of the College at the annual winter meeting of the Board of Trustees in Hanover on January 25-26.
Both elections, following nominations by the Dartmouth Alumni Council at its meeting two weeks earlier, were to fill unexpired terms. Mr. Sullivan will fill, until June go, 1958, the unexpired portion of the second five-year term of Sigurd S. Larmon '14 of New York, who has resigned from the Board. Mr. Dryfoos will fill, until June go, i960, the remainder of the second term of Lloyd D. Brace '25 of Boston, who was elected a Life Trustee of the College upon the retirement at 70 of John R. McLane '07 of Manchester, N. H.
At the time of nominating the two new Trustees the Alumni Council also paid tribute to the outstanding service of Mr. McLane and Mr. Larmon, in the following resolution:
RESOLVED, That in the retirement of John R. McLane '07 and Sigurd S. Larmon '14. from active service on the Board of Trustees, the Council of Alumni of Dartmouth College wishes to express its very deep appreciation to these devoted sons of the College for their long .service to Dartmouth. Both men fill positions of the highest responsibility and prestige in their professional and business lives. Both men have given their talents and their energies without stint to furthering the welfare of Dartmouth.
In behalf of the Alumni Body and in our own behalf, personally and officially, we salute their good works and we look forward to many years of continued association with them in new achievements for the College.
Mr. Sullivan, who maintains his legal residence in New Hampshire, practices law in Washington, where he served as Secretary of the Navy under President Truman. Dartmouth has long been one of his prime interests; he was president of the Alumni Council in 1950-51, served as chairman of the Council's Committee on Bequests, in which capacity he directed the establishment of the Dartmouth Lawyers Association, and for some years he has been president of the Class of 1921. Dartmouth conferred the honorary Doctorate of Laws upon him in 1949. Other honorary degrees have been received from Duquesne, New Hampshire, Loyola and the University of Portland. He was national chairman of Brotherhood Week in 1950; has been a leader in numerous philanthropic, educational, religious and service organizations; and is presently a director of companies in this country and Canada, including Aluminium Ltd., the Glenn L. Martin Company, and the Brown Company.
Mr. Dryfoos, who becomes the youngest member of the Board, was elected Vice President of The New York Times in 1954 in addition to his duties as Assistant to the Publisher, which he assumed in 1943 As a member of the Alumni Council since 1955 he has been particularly active on the Council's Committee on Public Relations. For three years following graduation from Dartmouth in 1934 Mr. Dryfoos was with Asiel and Company in New York, and from 1937 to 1949 he was a member of the New York Stock Exchange. He is vice president and a director of four subsidiary companies of The Times, is a director of Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company, a trustee of the Baron de Hirsch Fund, and a director and executive committee member of the New York chapter of the American Red Cross. In 1941 he was married to the former Marian Sulzberger and they have two daughters and a son.
The Dartmouth Board of Trustees is now restored to its full complement of five Life Trustees and five Alumni Trustees, in addition to President Dickey and Governor Lane Dwinell '28 of New Hampshire. The Life Trustees are Harvey P. Hood '18, Dudley W. Orr '29, Beardsley Ruml '15, Dr. Ralph W. Hunter '31 and Lloyd D. Brace '25. The Alumni Trustees are Thomas B. Curtis '32, Charles J. Zimmerman '23, Albert Bradley '15, Orvil Dryfoos '34 and John L. Sullivan '21.
