The Dartmouth varsity track team opened its winter season last weekend by losing a rather close contest to Harvard in the Alumni Gymnasium cage by a score of 60 2/3 to 48 1/3. The meet was about even going into the final two relay events, but the Crimson swept both of these to wrap up the victory.

The Indians got away to a strong start when veteran George Bixby broke the record he set last year by tossing the 35-pound weight 56' 11¼" for a new Dartmouth record. Steve Margolis and sophomore Fred Shanaman teamed up to place one-two in the shotput event, while Will Springer and John Diggs did the same in the pole vault.

Captain Doug Brew thrilled the spectators by coming from behind on the last lap of the mile and 1,000-yard run to win both events for Dartmouth. Springer and Bill Clark added other points by tying for second place in the broadjump, while Dick Sterling garnered second place in the high hurdles.

Coach Ellie Noyes was pleased with the team showing against Harvard, although the relay results were disappointing. The Indians should do fairly well this coming weekend in a quadrangular meet with Cornell, Syracuse and Colgate, although Cornell, like Harvard, is strong this winter.

Dual meets with Brown, Boston University and Yale, plus the annual Heptagonal and IC4A meets, round out the varsity schedule this winter.
