Two New Studies
February 1951

As outgrowths of their study of military education and national policy, Professor Masland and Professor Radway separately will undertake two new research projects in related fields. Professor Masland, under another grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, will make a two-year study of the reciprocal relationships of the ROTC programs and higher education in this country. Professor Radway, under a grant from the Social Science Research Council, will spend a sabbatical leave in Europe this spring carrying out at the NATO Defense College a study similar to that just completed in the field of U. S. military education.

In his project Professor Masland will identify and examine the principal problems arising from the relationship of ROTC programs and regular college programs. The interests and requirements of the armed services as well as those of higher education will be examined and reevaluated in the context of the broadest national interest. Professor Masland will not be on leave but will give full time to this study during the next two summers.

Professor Radway's study at the NATO Defense College, which prepares senior officers and civilians of thirteen nations for NATO duties, will be concerned with the manner in which strains or tensions within the NATO alliance are reflected at the College; also with the efforts of the College to develop common outlooks and practices among those who are going to serve the alliance. Most of his work will be done in Paris, but he plans also to visit NATO commands in Naples and Oslo.
