January 29 was 1957's Red Letter Day for the Dartmouth Family in Northern Ohio when we welcomed President John Sloan Dickey as speaker at our annual dinner. As is usual at this popular affair, a large group met in the Campus Room of the University Club for the happy hour before a roast beef dinner.
Maurie Cogan '28, our genial Club President, reviewed the past year's activities and introduced the chairman of each event. Then he turned the meeting over to Fletch Andrews '16, who is not only Dean of Western Reserve Law School, but Dean of Cleveland's Toastmasters. Even though it was the third such chore that week for Fletch, his unique wit was fresh enough to keep all 126 of us in the aisles.
Mr. Dickey vividly brought the hopes and plans concerning Dartmouth's 200 th year celebration to us. It is a big story and the wonders and the work connected with the program were so graphically drawn for us by Mr. Dickey that we all felt that the Dartmouth of the future would be an even more wonderful place to care about. Certainly the challenge to all of us to fall in behind this investment in the future — "to dare a deed" - could not have been more enthusiastically, nor more forcefully, presented than by Dartmouth's President. It was our honor to hear him speak.
