A glistening fresh snow made our annual Christmas luncheon at the Mid-Day Club on December 29 seem all the more reminiscent of Hanover days. While winter raged outside, 225 alumni, undergraduates, prospective freshmen and their fathers enjoyed the fine Dartmouth fellowship inside. Ned Petrequin'50 chairmaned this year's event and planned a fast-moving, fun-packed program that appealed to everyone. We were fortunate in having Bob Fairbank '33, as master of ceremonies again. His high-humored introductions even included some jokes so new that Jack Childs '09 hadn't heard them. Professor Joseph Marsh '47, of the Economics Department, told most effectively of the role the liberal arts college is playing in the present struggle for men's minds and how Dartmouth, particularly, is meeting that challenge. Mr. Marsh has a unique vantage point, as proctor of Cutter Hall, where he can observe the undergraduates. His reporting was highly entertaining and worthwhile.
Giving the Alumni the annual short course in freshman jargon and impressions of Hanover was "Woody" Fisher '60, who covered the subject very ably. He gave the prospectives some sage advice that will help them through the first weeks in good style. His father, Ellwood Fisher '21, had many comforting thoughts for the fathers in the group as he told of the fun it is to have a son in Dartmouth today.
Bob Fairbank '33, chairman of our club's current Scholarship Fund drive, made the first report on the progress of the campaign which started only three weeks ago. As of December 29 slightly more than one-third of the goal of $14,000.00 had been pledged. This heartening news is encouraging to the committee who are working to have the full amount pledged by the time of our annual banquet, January 29, when President Dickey will make one of his welcome (but all too infrequent) visits to Cleveland to be our speaker.
