In the best of birthday traditions the Dartmouth Club of Cleveland celebrated its 50th anniversary on December 28 with cake and ice cream and many friends and well-wishers in attendance. Just after President John B.Moore '40, opened the luncheon with a brief history of the founding of our club, the five-tier cake was wheeled in for all to see, and what the 282 guests saw was really something to admire too. From the golden numerals on the top to the Hanover scenes iced in color on the sides it was a work of art. The only charter member still living in Cleveland, John H. Watson '04, cut the first piece of cake as representative of the other five charter signers who were the honored guests: George B. Lowe '08, Thomas C. Wellsted '09, Henry Haserot '10, EugeneGardner 'll, and Elton Norris '11. Hank Haserot brought in a sheaf of early announcements and records which were the source of much amusement and proved that the club was active from the beginning even though the problems were many.

Kirk Spitler '34, ably performed the duties of master of ceremonies and introduced the main speakers. Bob Fairbank '33 spoke humorously and effectively from three different standpoints - that of a father of an undergraduate, a father of an applicant, and the chairman of our scholarship fund drive. All the undergraduates present were wonderfully represented by Dave Sharrock '58, from Ashland, Ohio. He brought the current spirit of Hanover to the Mid-Day Club and by his poise and ability won many friends for Dartmouth among the applicants and their fathers as well as underlining in alumni eyes the sound educational values the students are receiving today.

Coach Tommy Dent came from the campus and captivated the audience with the recollections of a soccer coach after 30 years. The Moose brought his best Vermont humor to color his stories of Hanover scenes and citizens. His obvious love of working with boys shone through all his remarks, and made everyone in the room feel that if he just went out for soccer and trained under this kindly, understanding man he would be better prepared for the game of life.

The program closed with the showing of the 1957 Football Highlights. Co-chairmen of this most successful Christmas luncheon were John Klein '52 and Ed Oberndorf '52, who proved by their hard work and imagination that they are party organizers of the first caliber and are hereby engaged to put on the 100 th birthday celebration.

An honored group at the 50th birthday party of the Dartmouth Club of Cleveland on December 28 were these six charter members: (l to r) John H. Watson '04, George B. Lowe '08, Thomas C. Wellsted '09, Henry M. Haserot '10, Eugene R. Gardner ' and Elton R. Norris '11. Over 200 attended the gathering and shared in the five-tiered birthday cake.
