After an opening loss to Harvard, the Dartmouth varsity track team defeated Cornell, Syracuse and Colgate in a quadrangular meet at Cornell, winning 47 to 45 over Cornell. In the most recent meet, it coasted to an easy 83-21 victory over Brown.
Going into the final event in the quadrangular meet, Dartmouth and Cornell were all even, but the Indians placed second in this two-mile relay, behind Syracuse, and won by a score of 47-45, with Syracuse third and Colgate fourth.
George Bixby won the 35-pound weight toss, Will Springer placed second in the pole vault and Steve Margolis third in the shotput, Brew won the mile race, Jim Mueller finished third in the 600-yard run, and Joe Graham and Gary Gilson took first and third in the 60-yard dash, to account for most of the Big Green points.
Dartmouth's mile relay team, anchored by Captain Doug Brew, won that event and this coupled with second place in the two-mile relay gave the victory to Dartmouth.
Against Brown, in the most recent dual meet, Dartmouth had little trouble as they romped 83-21. Bixby started things off for the Indians with a record-breaking toss of 56' 11¾" in the 35-pound weight toss, while Chip Hartenstein tied the College record in the 60-yard dash with a clocking of 5.5. Will Springer, Dartmouth's veteran pole vaulter, cleared the bar at 13' 6" for the first time in his career, while Doug Brew, as usual, won the mile race although pressed hard by Brown's Ed Sullivan.
