One of the top strategists among Eastern track coaches is Dartmouth veteran Ellie Noyes. Noyes plans each meet in advance and his master-minding usually pays off with at least one major upset win per season. This year Coach Noyes picked the opener - a quadrangular meet at Cornell, with Dartmouth, Cornell, Syracuse and Colgate competing. The Big Green runners took four first places to win the meet with 461/2 points to 401/2 for Cornell. Dartmouth's strong pole-vaulting quartet of Captain Lou Metzger, Bill Buchanan, Will Springer and John Diggs got the Indians away to a fast start, with Buchanan soaring 13' 7" to set a new College indoor and outdoor record. Metzger also broke his own indoor mark with a second-place vault of 13' 3", while Springer finished third and Diggs tied for fourth.

Veteran Doug Brew and sophomore Dick Schad teamed up for a one-two win in the 1,000-yard run and veteran John Chapman took the high-hurdles event. Going into the two-mile relay race Dartmouth led the field by two points and had to cop the relay to stave off Cornell. Here again, Schad and Brew, running third and anchor respectively, teamed up to put on a blistering finish that won the relay for the Indians and assured the meet.

Other Dartmouth victors were George Bixby with a second place in the weight toss, Willy Einarsson with a second in the broad jump and a third in the shot, Skip Kerr with a third in the broad jump, and Sandy Heath with a third in the 600-yard run.

Despite the encouragement of this initial victory, Coach Ellie Noyes is frank to admit that his 1956 team is only fair and will have a rough time against some of the stronger Ivy teams, especially in dual meets. The pole vault and middle-distance events are strong, but lack of talent and depth in the sprints, hurdles and distance events make it difficult to predict much more than an average season. The Indian runners have five dual meets plus the IC4A and Heptagonal meets remaining on the schedule.
