Despite a ten-day layoff for semester examinations, the past month has been an extremely busy one on the athletic front as Dartmouth teams in all sports moved into the heart of their winter schedules.
Sparked by tie impressive triumph of the ski team at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival, the Big Green varsity teams opened the second semester with generally impressive records behind them and greater hopes ahead. The basketball team, making a strong bid to retain its Ivy League crown, won the crucial Columbia game, 63-56, in Hanover on February 16, and took undisputed possession of second place with six wins and two losses. Yale, coached by Joe Vancisin '44, currently leads the league with a 7-1 record and comes to Hanover on February 27. The hockey team, which led the Ivy League until mid-February with a 3-0 standing, lost successive games to Yale and Harvard, but still was producing a greatly improved record over any of recent years.
Varsity team totals to date show 40 wins and 23 defeats. The freshman teams, headed by a basketball club undefeated in eight games, have posted 18 wins and seven losses. Combined totals are 58 wins against 30 losses, for one of Dartmouth's best winter seasons in some years.
