"I just threw another elm log on the fire after reading your interesting letter of March 8. I was disappointed not to read about a single classmate who had been skiing or snowshoeing. Remember the D.O.C. started our freshman year. I am mighty glad my roommate, senior year, EarleBidwell, shot a 200 lb. buck up in the region where in 1912 we had to walk in some 30 miles from the railroad to hunt the same, and then live on salt pork and potatoes.
Well to get to skiing, Lorna (my 14-year-old daughter) and I have been off a half dozen times this winter from the White Mountains south and we are both off again to the White Mountains skiing next Friday. In fact, it was a mere 47 years ago that our classmate Joe Cheney, Fred Harris '11 and I were the first to ski to the top of Mt. Washington and the previous year, "Eric" (G. L.) Foster and I did the same at Mt. Moosilauke after skiing some 40-50 miles across country to Mt. Moosilauke and then back to Hanover again at Mid-Years. Will any classmate try it next winter?
