DR. DOUGLAS HORTON, dean of the Harvard University Divinity School, will deliver the Commencement Address at Dartmouth's graduation exercises on Sunday morning, June 9. Entitled "The Return to the Sources," it will be the main address of the combined commencement and baccalaureate program scheduled to begin on the lawn in front of Baker Library at 11 a.m.
On Saturday morning, June 8, die guest speaker at the ROTC commissioning ceremonies in the Bema will be General J. Lawton Collins, USA (Ret.). The former Army chief of staff and World War II commander of the VII Army Corps, who earned the nickname "Lightning Joe," will address an audience including the 68 ROTC graduates who will be commissioned second lieutenants in the Army, Air Force or Marines, and the 57 who will become ensigns in the Navy. He will be introduced by Prof. Donald H. Morrison, Provost of the College.
Commencement speakers in addition to Dr. Horton, one of America's distinguished church leaders, will be Lloyd L. Weinreb '57 of Lawrence, N. Y., who will deliver the valedictory on behalf of the 615 graduating seniors, and President Dickey, who will give his traditional valedictory and also will deliver the honorary degree citations. Weinreb, the winner of a Reynolds Scholarship for study abroad next year, has led the Dartmouth debating team for three years and, with 5.00 representing perfection, has maintained a general scholastic average of 4.88.
The Commencement Weekend schedule includes Class Day exercises, the President's reception, band and glee club concerts, and the Commencement Ball on Friday, June 7; and the Commencement Luncheon and speaking program, class reunion banquets, and Players' production of From Rags to Riches on Saturday, June 8.
The Classes of 1887, 1892, 1897, 1902 and 1907 will hold reunions that weekend. The Fifty Year Address at the Commencement Luncheon will be given by 1907's class president, James M. O'Neill of Lakeville, Conn.
From Monday through Wednesday, June 10-12, the Classes of 1917, 1926, 1927 and 1928 will be in town for reunions. The first three days of Hanover Holiday will coincide with these reunions, and the Alumni Council's annual June meeting will open on the 12th.
The final Reunion Weekend begins with the arrival of the 25-Year Class of 1932 on Thursday, June 13. From Friday until Sunday, June 14-16, the Classes of 1947, 1951, 1952 and 1953 will add their hundreds to the reunion festivities. A talk by Bancroft H. Brown, Cheney Professor of Mathematics, on Thursday evening and two discussions by panels of prominent '32 men on Friday morning will form the second part of Hanover Holiday.
