Dartmouth's woodsmen's team, coached by Ross McKenny, has won the annual Woodsman's Weekend competition eight
times in the past ten years. This year, at the Middlebury College Bread Loaf Mountain campus, the Indians had to settle for second place with Paul Smith's College finishing first. Middlebury took third place and Maine fourth.
Dartmouth alumni and undergraduate skiers joined to defeat Harvard in the annual Dartmouth-Harvard slalom at Tuckerman's Ravine on Mt. Washington. Brooks Dodge '52, Olympic ace, led the field, while Monk Bancroft, Alden Van Buskirk, freshman ski captain, Dick Taylor and Don Page '47 finished second, fourth, eighth and tenth respectively. Harvard and Dartmouth have each won ten times now.
Switching to football. .. Dartmouth's former great quarterback, captain and coach, Jack Cannell '19, recently announced his retirement as football coach after 45 years. Cannell, who retires as head coach at Tiraip Academy in Kittery, Maine, but will continue to teach there, served as Dartmouth backfield coach under both Doc Spears and Jesse Hawley and was one of Dartmouth's outstanding head coaches in 1921-22 and 1929-34. A long and distinguished record on the gridiron as player and coach comes to an end, but Jack's influence on young men goes on.
Although the new Dartmouth Skiway at Holt's Ledge had far from an outstanding first season, because of lack of snow, Manager Howard Chivers '39 and a threeman crew are already getting set for next year. The Lyme Drop trail is being widened at the bottom to eliminate the final sharp pitch, the Worden Race Trail is having its steepest schuss widened, and all trails and areas are being graded and seeded to improve them for next year's snow.
Dr. William C. Wurtenberg died in New Haven, Conn, on March 28. A top quarterback at Yale, Dr. YVurtenburg was head football coach at Dartmouth from 1895 to 1899, and earlier had coached at the New York Athletic Club and at Navy. He was a prominent eye, ear, nose and throat specialist until his retirement in 1926. He was 93 years old at the time of his death.
