Secretary of the Year
June 1957

Herbert H. Harwood '26 (left) receives from Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, the annual award as Class Secretary of the Year at the May 3 dinner of alumni officers in Hanover. The citation read by Mr. Hayward was as follows:

Herbert H. Harwood '26, late last night, when the rest of Crosby Hall rested quietly in darkness, I secretly sought in the Alumni Magazine Office your installment of class notes for the forthcoming June issue. Because you will retire as secretary at your 30th class reunion next month I felt you might have something even more special than usual to say in the splendid column you write every month. I wasn't disappointed. The Gremlins helped me locate your copy for next month.

Members of '26 and many others will read in the June Magazine your reflections on writing 55 columns of class notes, when you say: "Those years have in retrospect passed very quickly with the great joy of renewing so many friendships that had temporarily faded. ... It was a priceless reward to have those office calls, to see you when on the road, to read your many unique and interesting letters, to know of the birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, the grand-parenthood, and even the occasional marriages and births. ... It has been tempered by sad news of classmates who have passed on, the grief of those who lost loved ones. ... It has been a never-to-be-forgotten experience to know all of you as only your class secretary can."

Hub Harwood - you have done a very outstanding job as both secretary and chairman of your class. It has teen a devoted and warm-hearted labor of deep love for the College and of true affection for your hundreds of classmates. Your farewell message sums it all up.

If Dartmouth knighted its sons you could be Sir Herbert. At the least, we can honor you tonight wtih the Class Secretary Award of the Year.
