1928's "Best of All" 30th
July 1957 OSMUN SKINNER '28,

THIS was the best reunion of all. With the blessing of good weather, excellent accommodations in the Gile-Streeter-Lord dormitory block, efficient committee management, and spirits that bubbled high but never over, 1928's Thirtieth was a grand success. Our only regret is that each and every one of you could not be present. There were, however, 177 Twenty-Eighters in Hanover for all or part of the reunion: 77 men, 54 wives and 46 children.

No recital of events could produce the rich and wonderful intangibles that made it a memorable occasion, the sense of affectionate fellowship that overhung the whole gathering.

John Cronin and his assistant Herb Sensenig, had worked out the arrangements magnificently; everything was letter perfect and there was not a hitch throughout. Jack Rose was praised for his pre-reunion publicity, Craig Haines was indefatigable as Registrar and Collector of the Tax, and the class officers were active in helping John and Herb with the details.

A few early birds arrived Sunday, but the group really began to roll in Monday morning. June 10, and register at '28 headquarters in Gile presided over by Craig Haines, who saw that everyone got the necessary tickets, a large name badge and a white visor cap with green 1928 numerals sewed on front. Early arrivals included Bob Reid, of Los Angeles, who came the greatest distance, Tavey Taylor and Honie and Mona Westhaver of San Francisco. The first beer keg was tapped in our tent by the middle of the morning and the rest of the day taken up with general reuning and getting the children registered and started on their varied and separate activities. At 5 o'clock we met in the class tent for a cocktail party, then adjourned to Thayer Hall for a delicious dinner served by Jeanette Gill. Dean Joe McDonald and his wife were our guests and the Dean gave a sparkling talk. President John Phillips presided and presented suitably engraved silver ash trays to retiring officers who have rendered outstanding service to the Class and College since the last reunion: Bill Cogswell, class agent 1952-54; Herm Schnepel, class agent 1955-56, and Bill Morton, chairman of the entire Alumni Fund. Your scribe then presented an engraved silver ash tray to John in recognition of his inspired leadership of the class since our 25th reunion.

After dinner, President and Mrs. Dickey, assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Sid Hayward, received the four classes of '17, '26, '27 and '28 in the beautiful garden of their home. The rest of the evening was spent in the tents with the '26 and "27 group mingling in to renew a lot of valued friendships. We had a hired orchestra, but it didn't draw the crowd that the hot combo of volunteers in the '27 tent did, where Ed Lilley held forth on his sax with four '27ers.

Tuesday morning the class picture was taken in mid campus, followed by a memorial service in Rollins Chapel for our 60 deceased members, conducted by Rev. George Kalbfleisch, graduate secretary of the Dartmouth Christian Union. The class meeting was then held in Carpenter Hall with John Phillips conducting it with his usual efficiency. Craig Haines gave his treasurer's report and it appears the balance is reasonably healthy, thanks to a new record number of dues payers — 312. Your scribe gave a brief report, including a plea for more letters, and an apology for the non-arrival of the new class directory which was to be distributed at reunion. (Railway Express lost them between New York and Hanover; they arrived after reunion and Herb and Mirni Sensenig are handling the considerable chore of mailing them to you.) John Cronin reported on reunion and received a rousing vote of thanks. Cal Billings got in his last licks on the Alumni Fund. John Flanagan reported the Nominating Committee's recommendation, unanimously adopted, that the following officers be elected to serve until the next reunion in 1962: President - George Pasfield; Vice Presidents - Jack Herpel and George Cutler; Treasurer - Craig Haines; Secretary - Os Skinner. Then we picked up wives and children and went to Thayer Hall for a delicious luncheon as guests of the College. Afterwards we moved over to Commons for the alumni meeting of all four classes at which Sid Hayward and President Dickey spoke. We were proud to have our Rick Rickenbaugh, vice-president of the General Association of Alumni, preside.

A large group went to watch the Dartmouth -M.I.T. crew races early in the afternoon (Phillips and Jennings had sons rowing). By mid-afternoon everyone in '27 and '2B had arrived at the Keene's ski lodge in the hills beyond Etna, which proved to be an ideal spot for a picnic. There was plenty of beer, out-sized beefburgers, etc. We returned to Hanover in time for the Players' stirring melodrama "From Rags to Riches, Or Virtue Rewarded," and more of the pleasures of the reunion tent until the not-so-weehours of the morning.

Wednesday morning a number of '28ersattended the Hanover Holiday lecture byHadley Cantril on "The Communist Partyin Western Europe: What is its Appeal?"The final event was a buffet luncheon at theInn.
