Tom Komarek deserved it— and "he got it: The Dartmouth Alumni Award. This is the prestigious award honoring longstanding and meritorious service to Dartmouth, with career achievement and community service as additional important dimensions. The presentation was at the gala dinner in Berry Sports Arena during the Class Officers Weekend in September. On hand were his wife, Judy, and sons Chris and Jim. The citation states in part: "Although busy with career, family and civic responsibilities, you never forgot about your alma mater and have worked tirelessly for Dartmouth. You have served your class as newsletter editor, minireunion chair, president and reunion chair. In 1987 you were named class newsletter editor of the year. Other contributions include chair of the Alumni Council's continuing education committee, fraternity agent and leadership agent. You have now assumed the title of the class of' 62 birthday and trip czar." There was an extended standing ovation as Tom stepped to the podium to accept the award and make some thoughtful remarks. Congratulations, Tom. The award is well deserved.
David Pritchard has developed quite an interest in Scottish history, culture and law. At coffee in The Shaker Inn in Enfield, New Hampshire, at our mini-reunion this past November David enthralled me with examples of how important Scottish law was in the formative years of the United States. He is the principle of Visualize Productions, a company engaged in documentary film. Now David is working his extensive contacts in Scotland to organize—along with Tom Komarek—a Scottish trip for the class. It is shaping up for August and promises to be a must do event. Watch for more details in the class newsletter, e-mail and bulletins.
Insurance man turned scholar-teacher John Clark earned a Ph.D. in history from Princeton awhile back. Out of his thesis work came a most remarkable book, Railroads in TheCivil War; The Impact of Management on Victory andDefeat I am no Civil War buff but I found the book fascinating and do heartily recommend it. John describes how superior logistics, planning, organization and command of the railroads by the Union were crucial in the war with the Confederacy. Sit down with this book and you will not be disappointed. It is published by the Louisiana State University Press.
Another Dartmouth '62 author is the creator of multi-media chronicles at our reunions—Ross Burkhardt. Ross has been a middle school English and social studies teacher for many years. He has just published Writing for Real; Strategies for Engaging AdolescentWriters. Ross writes that his book is designed for language arts teachers working with middle school kids. It promises to be an important addition to educators' libraries. Did you know that Ross was inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame in 1998?
Steven Roth, chief executive of Vornado Realty Trust, was featured recently in Cram's NewYork Business: "The Manhattan-based firm has become both the city's largest commercial landlord and the biggest non-government landlord in the Washington, D.C., area."
