The following letter, dated May 21, was sent to President Dickey by John D. Rockefeller Jr., who last year pledged $1,000,000 toward the cost of constructing a cultural and social center to be named in honor of President-Emeritus Ernest Martin Hopkins:
DEAR DR. DICKEY:
I have before me your letter of May 16th together with a copy of the Dartmouth Alumni Monthly Magazine for May largely devoted to the Hopkins Center. The conception of the Center as thus presented
is one of the most imaginative, constructive and epoch-making events which has occurred in the educational field in a long time. It is magnificent, and in its outreach to all of the students is unique. What greater tribute could there be to Dr. Hopkins! How completely it embodies his own conception of the prime purpose of a university — namely, to fit those who go out from its doors to live useful, constructive lives wherever they may find themselves! I count it a privilege to have a small part in this enterprise and I wish for it the fullest measure of success.
Very sincerely,
New York, N. Y.
