Greetings, '19ers, from your aging Secretary and here we go again for the 1958-59 season. The big 40th Reunion is not too far away, next June 15-17 so start making your plans. Chug Sears is chairman of the big event and you will be hearing about the plans during the coming months. Chug will require a lot of help to get out the big crowd we expect so start talking it up with any classmates you see. 1918 had a total of 233 present last June, which included 128 '18ers. Let's see if we can't top that fine record. The account of the big fall party at Woodstock-Hanover will come later, because of the September 5 deadline for this issue of the MAGAZINE, and will be reported both in this column and Dan Featherston's Smoke Signal.
A nice letter from Ray Hinds of theRindge Wool Corporation, 38 ChaunceyStreet, Boston, was received:
"Thanks very much for the birthday card. Ray Jr. '52 and Judy presented us with a new granddaughter Judith Eleanor on March 29. - is their second child, and our sixth grandchild. Harriette and I had a quiet February vacation at Varadero Beach in Cuba just before the revolu- tion flared. A card received a few days ago from the beach at Waikiki notified us that Milton and Ruth Tucker are traveling again this year. They spent several months in Europe last year. Jigger Merrill, as commanding general of the U. S. Reserve 94th Division returned from several days at Fort Knox last week, to act as host for Secretary of the Army, Wilbur M. Brucker, on his trip to Boston".
Norm Sterling of Jacksonville, Fla., checks in: "I wrote to-day for reservations at Woodstock, for the class week end there in October. While Elizabeth and I possibly cannot claim any prize for coming from the most distant point to this affair, I believe that we could win a prize for coming via the most roundabout ]way. We take off in a couple of weeks for New Orleans, Brownsville, Tampico, Mexico City, Acapulca (fishing), Guaymas (fishing), Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Victoria, B. C., Campbell River (fishing), Banff, Lake Louise, Calgary and then across the top of the Etats Unis to Hanover. Best regards - and we will see you in the fall."
Post cards received during the summer - from Bea and Ed Martin sojourning in Honolulu note: "This is some place and we have been treated royally by everyone from the Governor down." From Harriett and Lou Munro postmarked Cordoba, Spain saying: "Terminating our motor tour of Spain when we drive from Merida to Madrid. Have had perfect weather for two weeks. Will be trying for trout and salmon in Scotland next week." Larry and Mary McCutcheon report in from the Lake of the Woods in Canada where they were having a change of scenery from their home in Florida. Hal and EdithP Parsons have been cruising off Long Island in their boat and as Hal says: "Having a good loaf." The Trace Kohls were in Mexico touring by car and in Correo Aereo during May. Trace reports catching a 200-pound marlin when they were in Mazatlan - your Secretary didn't realize that there are so many fishermen in the class.
Murray Hawkins of Los Angeles, Calif., notes: "Certainly is nice to have remembrance of an unfortunate event from the class each year. There are two events of interest in my case. My first granddaughter, Angelina, a daughter of my son, W. M. Jr., class of '50. He already has two sons and I have been appointed treasurer of the City of Sierra Madre. I did not get East this year, but hope very much that I will make it next spring and hope I will be able to see some of the Nineteeners when I am there."
Bill Alderman, now a resident of Jacksonville, Fla., and associated with the Walker Wholesale Hardware Co. writes in a nice letter: "Belatedly and with apologies I acknowledge receipt of your birthday card. Since moving to Jacksonville I have had occasion to see Bob Blackman when he was here in February and had a short chat with Earle Blaik on the sad occasion of his attendance at Herman Hickman's funeral, which I also attended. To date this constitutes my activities except from a business standpoint, but I hope within the next few months to contact some of the other members of the class who are now residents of Florida. Needless to say, I will not be with you in Woodstock this fall but envy all of you the grand time that X know you will have."
