Further echoes of the Hopkins Dinner - Mike McGean, secretary of the Dinner Committee, wrote the Secretary a very nice note which really applies to the Class: "The Dinner Committee, the College, indeed the entire alumni body, is more than indebted to you for the impressive attendance results attained by the Class of 1919. This note is a personal word of thanks for such complete cooperation and help throughout the pre-dinner period. I know this involved sacrifice of time and effort (once again) for Dartmouth."

John Chipman wrote a wonderful letter (see Dan Featherston's Smoke Signal) expressnig his appreciation of the affair, a copy of which your Secretary forwarded to Dr. Hoptans, and received the following typical gracious reply: "Dear George: I thank you very much indeed for sending me John Chipman's letter. I liked everything about it, and I was particularly happy at the acknowledgement that he made of the gratitude we all had reason to feel toward Milburn McCarty. I think you were right in stating that in figures 1919 was second only to 1933. Certainly as I looked out over the vast gathering, I felt that I had new reason to be appreciative for the support which the class has always given me as I saw the number of tables that were required to take care of the '19 attendance. Thanking you for your personal word and for what you say as representative of the class, I am deeply obliged for both."

Art Palmer of Stamford, Conn., writes in: "Your yearly reminder of the passage of time arrived, as usual, right on time and was very welcome. Also, as usual, my response is tardy, for which I offer my apology. I truly hope that you will find sufficient reward for your labors in the responses the cards induce, for I would really miss this yearly reminder of many happy days with a grand bunch of guys. Please pass on to the author (Secretary's note - Bill Grant of Ruxton, Md.) of this year's card my congratulations for a fine job."

Cards from Andy and Bertha Scarlett '10 indicate that they have been staying at Dick Wilder's Ivy League Apartments in Clear-water Beach, Fla., and enjoying themselves to the utmost. The pictures of Dick's project show it to be a most attractive place.

From Jack Childs '09, well-known notes editor for that class, comes news of Lou Cody: "When the Cleveland Skating Club puts on its annual show this year, Lou will be conspicuous by his absence from the senior dance number in which he has specialized for a number of years. He was in an auto accident and broke several ribs, fortunately escaping more serious injury. Lou had another unhappy accident a few years ago while skating. His skates tangled with those of another skater, Lou was thrown backward, sustaining a bad back injury. From this he recovered and was able to resume his skating until the auto accident."

Polly Pollard writes in: "Thank you for the card. I know that man who is portrayed but cannot think of his name at the moment. The last year certainly did rush by fast but was duly enjoyed. After Asia, I find the pace here rather leisurely and I aim to stay around a while and pace it. I hope that you have the best year ever."

Among those working on the Special GiftsCampaign for the 200th Anniversary Program in the New York area are Nick Sandoe,Win Batchelder, head of the MetropolitanArea, Harry Colwell, head man in West-chester County, Fat Jackson, Walt Cooper,Tom Bresnahan, Lou Munro, Bill Goldberg,Will I. Levy, Ray Legg, Bill (William Thompson) Smith, San Treat and your Secretary (there must be others but the lists are in the office and these notes are being typed at home).

Warde Wilkins, long time secretary of '13 contributes the following: "Clark (Bunny) and Madelaine Collins are back in Sarasota. They have sold their Arlington home and now summer on Ragged Mountain at the Ragged Mountain Fish and Game Club and winter in Sarasota." Sounds like a good deal, Clark and Madelaine. Lou and HarrietMunro flew to Spain on April 26 and expect to spend some time in London and Scotland returning on the "Queen Mary" late in May. These presidents sure do get around. The annual message from Ernie Rautenberg, of Elmhurst, Ill., arrived:

I don't agree with some of the class who pretend they ignore their birthdays. The class card is always welcomed and I think you deserve a great deal of credit, not only for keeping up this nice custom, but for putting the personal note on the back which adds such a nice touch. There is no news for you to put in the MAGAZINE as far as I'm concerned. I do look forward to seeing all of you a year from June. Had a little note from Fred Daly the other day asking me to pinch hit as Illinois Class Agent for Tracy Kohl who can't handle the job this year for some reason. Of course, I immediately wrote Fred that I'd be glad to do whatever I can in the interest of the class. Three weeks ago I attended the alumni meeting here in Chicago when President Dickey kicked off the local drive for the Hopkins Center and did I feel old! There were only two alumni in the room with class badges that antedated 1919.

As most of you know, the Alumni Fund this year is stressing participation, not dollars, which means that any gift from any of you, no matter how small, will be most welcome. To those of you who never have contributed, how about making a start this year?

It is not too early to remind you of the Woodstock-Hanover football weekend slated for October 3-5. Come one, come all to root the "Big Green" home to victory over Penn and even if we lose (which is utterly unthinkable), you'll still have a barrel of fun - and breathe some good, clean New Hampshire air in the bargain. As the airlines' ads say, "Make your reservations early and don't be a 'don't show.' "

A 1919 Party: L to r, Harriet Munro, FatJackson, Lou Munro and Alice Earle Hayes. In the background, settling everything, areHarry Colwell and Dan Featherston. Curlinghats courtesy of Ed and Jessie Fiske, atwhose home the party was held.
