With Big Green Teams
March 1958

AFTER a ten-day recess for semester examinations, Dartmouth's winter teams resumed action over the Jan. 31-Feb. 2 Winter Carnival weekend and, for the most part, proceeded merrily along their winning ways. During the three-day Carnival the basketball team defeated Brown to remain well out in front in the race for the Ivy League championship; the hockey team avenged a previous defeat by winning over Boston College but then dropped a league contest to defending champions, Harvard; and the varsity swimming team defeated Colgate. The Big Green skiers, in their first major meet of the winter, successfully defended the Dartmouth Carnival crown by winning first place over eight competing teams.

In the two weeks following Carnival the Big Green teams have slowed up a trifle, but over all they are still well on the way to one of the best winter records compiled in recent history. Dartmouth's fast-moving basketball team, thanks to a strong first team and an unusually fine bench, has now posted a record of 17 wins against only two defeats and is out in front in the Ivy League race with eight league wins and one loss. Another surprise has been the showing of the Big Green hockey team, still in the rebuilding stage, which has an overall record of ten wins against five defeats, although the Ivy record of one victory in four games is disappointing. Dartmouth's swimmers swept to four consecutive triumphs in February over Colgate, Penn, Princeton, and Harvard (a big upset) for a record to date of six wins and two losses.

After winning their first four matches the squash team lost league matches to Princeton, Harvard and to Yale for a record of four wins and three defeats; while the track team, after dropping its first three dual meets, got back into the win column with its most recent victory over Columbia. In February action the wrestling team defeated McGill for the second time this season and then defeated the University of Massachusetts for a 3-2 record. In skiing, the Big Green, after winning their own Winter Carnival, placed second to Middlebury at the Williams College four-event Carnival meet but came back to capture the Eastern intercollegiate championship at the annual Winter Carnival meet at Middlebury. Varsity totals for all Dartmouth winter teams as of mid-February were 41 wins against only 17 defeats.

Dartmouth freshman teams also continue to compile impressive records with the basketball squad showing six wins and two losses, hockey with a 7-2 record, and swimming with five wins and no losses. Squash has lost four and the freshman track team has won one and lost two dual meets. Freshman totals reveal 19 wins and 10 losses, while combined totals for all teams are 60 victories and 27 defeats.

Sophomore Chuck Kaufman lays up a basket in the 58-48 victory over Cornell.
