Remember when summer was a threemonth-long adventure? Remember all the summer doings you were bursting to report, each September return to Hanover? Summer jobs and travels ... summer sports and parties ... summer romances. What a news-col-umn those vacations would have made! Oh well... we may have slowed-down a bit, but:

WE STILL GET AROUND

As president of the American Hospital Supply Corp., Tom Murdough flew to London for the International Hospital Exhibition, attended by 20,000 "hospital people," from 66 countries. (Grace went along, "as a sort-of nurse.") Hugh and Charlotte Morrison took a little 6.000-mile drive to Yellowstone, the Black Hills, Big Horns, Grand Tetons and Rockies. Charlotte reports that even the sunbaked prairie states seemed cool, compared with the '59 summer in Hanover. Ritchie Smith, as a member of "The Frogmen of Mexico," spent a fantastic two weeks on an expedition diving for sunken ships and treasure, off the coast of Yucatan. At the Class Officers' Weekend in Hanover, '26 was represented by Chip and Dolores Chipman, Bruce and Kay Eaken, Ed and Evelyn Hanlon, and Hal and Marion Marshall. And from Nick Nickerson's widow, Lucy: —"I went out to son John's graduation from Stanford in June. It was pretty hard, without Nick, because Nick was so proud of his son. Right now it looks as if John might be doing his graduate work at Stanford, as he likes it there very much." (For further proof that we still get around, please note the large number of new addresses, at the close of our Column.)

WE WIN NEW LAURELS

Bob McConnaughey is now Trial Commissioner for the U.S. Court of Claims, in Washington. Don Mackay has completed three years as Arbitor of Motor Vehicle tort cases for the Massachusetts Superior Court. Courtney (The Irrepressible) Brown has been elected a public governor of the New York Stock Exchange. Our (very) former featherweight boxing champ will be governing in fast company; the other two public governors are the President of I.B.M., and the President of Libbey-Owens-Ford!

It's a long time since we've had word of Miller Pierce, who has been elected President of the Bedford (N. Y.) School Board. Our clipping reports that:

Pierce was first elected to the School Board in 1955. He is an executive in the William Barton Marsh advertising firm in New York. A graduate of Dartmouth College, he lives at Bedford Village Farms with his wife, Adelaide, and their two daughters, Nancy, thirteen, and Susan, who will be twelve next month. He has been active in Bedford Presbyterian Church, Bedford Lions Club, Bedford Fire Department, and Bedford PTA Executive Committee.

Herb Darling has been elected a Trustee of Colby Junior College, once attended by daughter Virginia. In case you've forgotten, Herb is also a member of the Board of Overseers of Thayer School. A clipping regarding Ken Andler advises us that "he is the author of two books for children, 'The Stolen Spruce' and 'The Signal Net.' A contributor to magazines, his 'Harper's' article entitled 'Surveyor in the Woods' is included in the anthology 'Patterns in Writing.'"

Our multi-laureled Congressman, Ed Dooley, sent us a copy of the highly impressive Washington Newsletter he mailed ("Not at government expense") to his 190,000 constituents, and closed with this hospitable paragraph: "During the spring, which is very lovely in Washington, we have had hundreds of visitors stopping in my office. They are always welcome. Mv office door is open to constituents at any time during working hours." We feel sure Ed's door is also open to all '26-ers... even Democrats.

WE FATHER NEW BRIDES

Art and Edith Alexander's daughter Susan became the bride of Sheridan Dauster Speeth, May 31, in Brockton, Mass. Bob and PenseCleary's daughter Susan became the June bride of William Ray Garratt. Sandy andHelen Martyn's daughter Nancy became the bride of Lt. David Ball Hanson, June 20, in Rockville Centre, N. Y. Bob and VirginiaMay's daughter Barbara became the bride of Leslie Stuart Patrick, September 19, in Pelham Manor, N. Y.

SAD NEWS, TOO

From Bruce Tomlinson, whose wife Myrtle wrote last June: - "Bruce has been very seriously ill for more than six months now, hospitalized for more than four of the six. He had two bad coronary attacks and a stroke. He has conquered the stroke. By sheer willpower he overcame most of his paralysis, and can get around now where he pleases, but must give up his business and any contact with any worry." Myrtle's August letter was even more encouraging (and inspiring): "Your very nice letter pleased Bruce tremendously; he so much appreciates hearing from his old friends and classmates. He is amazing his doctors; he is truly making great strides. His paralysis is entirely gone, and we are even hoping that by fall he will be well enough to go to the Dartmouth-Yale game." We have also received word of the serious illness of Art Cunningham, in Spokane. No details. Bruce Eaken writes that Charlie Bishop had some rough weather health-wise last winter, but is now OK. again. Saddest news is the sudden passing of Ralph (Doc) Jones, as reported in the In Memoriam section. (Our first loss in 10 months.)
