Tragedy can bring a feeling of unity to a neighborhood, or to a scattered family, or to a scattered Class like ours. The death of Bus Heydt brought us letters from more than twenty classmates ... the majority sending newspaper clippings as well. Hub Harwood wrote from Boston: - "We had just learned that Bus was here in Boston for the opening of his new play, and were planning to entertain him at our class luncheon next Thursday. So you can imagine our shock this morning in reading the news of his sudden attack and passing last night." From New York, Chip Chipman wrote: - "We in New York were planning to be present in a body, when his new play opened on Broadway, the last of February." And from Hollywood, Bob Williams: "It's doubly sad that a death has to be the reason for me to write you. Here is a copy of the obituary that Bus Heydt's widow, Donna, asked me to write for Bus. I didn't include this, but it might interest some of the fellows to know that Bus, Charlie Starrett and I were all in the same class, and the same fraternity delegation, and that all three of us went into the theater within one year of each other." We are deeply grateful to Bob for the fine obituary tribute that appeared in the March In Memoriam. Bus Heydt was an out standing '26-er, from his first day in Hanover till the day of his death. In case anyone might possibly have forgotten, Bus was our president and dynamic leader in our proudest moment of Class unity, Class spirit: - the victorious Picture Fight in the spring of '23.
George Champion was the principal speaker at the annual banquet of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Boston. Rev. Richard"Wee" McClintock, who gave the invocation, was also at the speakers' table. With our " '26 Regulars" spreading the word a la Paul Revere (by TELEPHONE, silly!) '26 turned out in sufficient numbers to capture the annual attendance cup. The winning delegation included: Joe Batchelder, Margaret and Henry Bixby, Henry Blake, Gardner Brown, Dot and Russ Clark, Randall Cox, Ed Emerson, Det and Hub Harwood, Marion and Hal Marshall, Betty and Chet Morrison, Dot and Don Norstrand, Mary Lou and Stew Orr, Walt Rankin, Herb Redman, Dot and Bob Salinger, Carl Schipper, and Hal Trefethen.
A newsy news-bit from Les Talbot "Apologies for reporting at this late date that our daughter Ann was married last May to William B. Brown, Cornell '57. Ann was a Skidmore graduate of the same vintage. Last September Paul Allen joined Dot and me for some travel in England and France. But for the help of Emmett "Red" Willis, who's the boss at United States Lines in Paris, Paul would still be in Europe. Come to think of it, he's probably sorry he isn't!"
At the annual meeting of the American Bar Association, Osmer C. Fitts, of Brattleboro, Vt., was chosen Chairman-elect of the House of Delegates. After one year in this "elect" capacity, Ozzie will move up to the position of Chairman. Dick Eberhart was one of twelve new members elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters. A Somerset Hills (N.J.) paper reports that: John Biclcford, Morris Township Committeeman and member of the Board of Managers of the Morris County Savings Bank, spoke yesterday to the upperclassmen of St. Bernard's School on investment research as a career. Formerly a resident of Washington, D.C., and a graduate of Dartmouth College, Mr. Bickford has had over thirty years experience in this field and for many years was associated with the Tri-Continental Group of Investors of New York. At present he acts as financial consultant for small business concerns.
We have received the complaint that EdFarnum's many worthy civic activities keep his name and picture in the Boston papers with monotonous regularity. Boston seems to dominate the column this month: - WarrenFellingham went to the Boston Eye and Ear Hospital (all the way from Illinois) for a successful operation for a detached retina. And Art Cunningham was forced to retire from his practice as a Spokane (Wash.) surgeon, last June, as a result of brain surgery.
If you want to be included in the '26 Directory (and haven't already done so) please send your present mailing address to Kenneth Weeks, The Walton Company, Box 5, Elmwood Branch, Hartford 10, Conn. If the address on the mail you receive from Dartmouth is wrong, please send your correct address to the Alumni Records Office, in Hanover.
