Since depressing news seems out of placein a pre-Christmas column, we'll cover itquickly. We regret to report the loss of noless than three classmates since our last column: Walt Moore, Maurice O'Leary, and StuHollister. A total of nine deaths in 1960'sfirst nine and a half months, more than inany other calendar year. We actually lostfive men in the two-month period from mid-August to mid-October ... two more than inall of 1959.
Russ Clark has sent us a report on whatwe used to call the Harvard Peerade.
The Ninth Annual 1926 luncheon and boat ride to the Harvard game was held again this year. The weather was gorgeous after two rainy years, the stadium was filled and the only sour note was that the Harvard football team refused to cooperate.
Among those in attendance were the following: Joe and Peggy Batchelder, Henry and Mary Blake, Henry and Margaret Bixby, Russ and Dot Clark, Harry Fisher, Hal and Marion Marshall, Wee and Dot McClintock, Don and Dot Norstrand, Stu and Mary Lou Orr, Walt and Billie Rankin, Herb and Fran Redman and Don Steele. In addition t here were assorted guests bringing the total to about 48. Additionally, free-loader Bob Salinger made the return boat trip.
(Note to Salinger and Clark: - our lawyer has advised us that in a slander suit resulting from a quoted statement, only the original author of the statement is liable.)
George Champion made the October headlines t wice: - first in his appointment to the Board Chairmanship of New York's Chase Manhattan Bank; second, as the keynote speaker of the Salute Dinner honoring 200 college presidents and 200 corporation executives, sponsored by the Independent College Funds of America. The Salute Dinner launched a nationwide campaign on behalf of 488 independent liberal arts colleges banded together across the nation in forty State and Regional Associations, with 200 college presidents calling on companies in the New York City area to encourage greater industry-education cooperation. This is the largest number of college presidents in the annals of American higher education to join forces in New York City to ask for support of the independent liberal arts colleges.
From the New York Times' pre-election story on Congressman Eddy Dooley's campaign for reelection: -
Mr. Dooley is a "joiner," a hearty, roly-poly (255-pound) extrovert. At Dartmouth he was a star quarterback. He went on to obtain a law degree from Fordham University, but never practiced. Instead, he worked as a radio sports announcer, a feature writer for the old New York Sun, and a public relations man. For six years, he was Mayor of Mamaroneck. Mr. Dooley's son, Edwin B. Jr., is personnel coordinator for the New York Telephone Company.
The careers of two sons of '26-ers have made them residents of Hanover. We hope Stew Orr will forgive our being so tardy in mentioning the proud appointment of his son David '57 as Assistant Editor of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. Ab Oakes, too, would be proud, could he know of the appointment of his son Abner Oakes III '56 as coach of freshman soccer and freshman hockey. If we may quote from "With the Big Green Teams," "Oakes, captain and standout defenseman on the Dartmouth varsity hockey team from 1954 through 1956, is the son of the late Abner Oakes II '26 and the grandson of Charles W. Oakes '83, who scored Dartmouth's first touchdown against Amherst 79 years ago this fall."
And a bit of nostalgia from Dick Burlin-game: "The panoramic view of the college shown on the postcard you sent makes me homesick for Hanover. I can remember in particular the night we spent off in the hills, acting as decoys during our 1926 class picture fight. Do you recall that night? As I remember it, we did a pretty good job of keeping the sophomores away from our main group. I better not go on with this reminiscing because I am sure to get sentimental."
Our annual Yale-game reporter, Al Louer, advises us that the following '26 mourners were among those present at New Haven: Courtney and Marjorie Brown, Ed andCharlotte Chaffin (with daughter Linda); Snipe Esquerre, Harry and Mary Fisher, Fredand Kay Hurd, Hap and Mabel Johnston, Aland Ellen Louer, Dick Mandel, Stew andMary Orr, Skip and Marjorie Smith.
Christmas being a sentimental season, Dick's letter makes a fitting closing for this December column. From '26, to '26-ers, a Merry Christmas to you and yours.
